Once a couple decides to have a child, they start to realize some of the big changes that will be coming to their lives. For many parents, this means that their focus will now turn toward ensuring that their child is allowed every opportunity to be successful, and living in a stable, nurturing environment.

Some parents may decide to end their relationship or marriage, and this change could have a major impact upon the child. After the relationship is over, both parents will generally want to be there for their child, which means that the couple will need develop a child custody plan.

Many couples may think that they will be able to work out an agreement on their own. They soon find that these discussions can become quite difficult, with the parents unable to come to an agreement on even the most basic of issues. If this happens, the couple will turn to the courts for assistance with their concerns.

When the court considers Texas child custody cases, it will base its decision on the best interests of the child. These factors include the needs of the child, the parental ability of each of the parents, the stability of the environment for the child and the wishes of the child. The court will analyze these and other factors to determine a custody and visitation plan that allow both parents to play a role.

During these proceedings, the parents may need to demonstrate why they should be awarded custody. This can lead to a lot of finger-pointing by both sides, leaving the parents upset with one another after the issue has been resolved by the court. However, it is important that they put these feelings aside and focus on working together to raise the child.

When the new parenting-time schedules are first put in place, it can be a difficult adjustment period for everyone involved, including the child. Parents need to be sure that they can rely upon one another to meet their obligations. They need to know that both sides are focused on providing a positive environment for the child, and commit to working out their disagreements respectfully when they arise.

If you have questions about a child custody issue, including the modification of a prior order, speak to a knowledgeable family law attorney about the options that are available to you. Often, child custody will be a very difficult and emotional issue to resolve, and parents need to prepare for this part of the process.
