There are few things in life as rewarding as becoming a parent. Once the child is born, the parents know that they have a great responsibility to ensure that they will provide for their child's needs. This will require parents to make decisions that are in the child's best interests, which may not always be easy to determine.
For parents whose relationship with one another is coming to an end, they will need to determine how they will continue to work together to raise the child. This can be extremely difficult at first, because often, the break-up or divorce will lead to resentment and mistrust.
Many of these couples will work very hard to try to come to an agreement concerning child custody. Both parents will be committed to remaining involved in the child's life, and it can be difficult to find an agreement that completely satisfies the wants and needs of each side.
Frequently, child custody matters will require the court to issue a ruling. When the court is asked to intervene, it will base its decision on the best interests of the child. This means that it will review the situation, looking closely at the ability of each parent to determine which arrangement will be best for the child.
In many cases, this review will lead to a situation where one parent may have legal custody of the child, but the other parent will still be allowed parenting time or visitation with the child. The parents will also need to work out a schedule that permits both parents to be involved in holidays and other major events in the child's life.
After a custody agreement has been put in place, one of the parents may find that there has been a change in his or her circumstances that will require revisions to the arrangement. The other parent may agree to these changes, or, the matter may wind up in the courts. It may be challenging to get the court to permit the agreement to be modified, so both parties should be sure that they express their wishes and needs during the initial proceedings.
If you have questions about a child custody matter, contact a knowledgeable family law attorney to discuss your concerns. Many parents that go through this process are not familiar with how courts approach these cases, and can make crucial mistakes when trying to obtain custody.
An attorney can help you understand how to show the court that you should remain part of the child's life. You need someone that has handled these cases in the past, and is familiar with the courts in the area looking out for your best interests.
