Deaf and Hard of Hearing Older Adults in Southeast Michigan Receive Key Services from Deaf & Hearing Impaired Services, Inc.

Deaf & Hearing Impaired Services (DHIS) provides important services for older adults in southeast Michigan who are deaf or hard of hearing. Among the most critical and widely used services are certified sign language interpreters.

The ability to effectively communicate is a daily necessity some may take for granted. For deaf or hard of hearing individuals some additional resources are often required for effective communication to be possible. Deaf & Hearing Impaired Services (DHIS) of Farmington Hills is an organization founded and managed by third and fourth generation family members of deaf individuals and is committed to providing vital services to the older adults who are deaf or hard of hearing in southeast Michigan.

Sign language interpreter services are a large piece of what DHIS does for the deaf or hard of hearing community. Sign language interpreters are needed in almost every daily setting to enable communication, including health care visits, educational settings, daily errands, social services, financial services and any sort of legal meeting or appointment. Many of the deaf or hard of hearing older adults in southeastern Michigan depend on the sign language interpretation and other services provided by DHIS.

The knowledge of the needs of deaf or hard of hearing individuals is what makes DHIS such an invaluable resource. DHIS staff takes pride in being able to provide high quality state and nationally certified sign language interpreters and other advocacy services to deaf or hard of hearing older adults. DHIS is also part of a coalition to develop the first housing facility for deaf or hard of hearing older adults in the State of Michigan, because they recognize the growing and unique needs of the deaf or hard of hearing community.

Established in 1993, Deaf & Hearing Impaired Services (DHIS) is a nonprofit, grass roots agency providing a continuum of high quality, comprehensive services for deaf and hard of hearing older adults and their families in southeast Michigan.
