2013-06-10
HOUSTON, TX, June 10, 2013 (Press-News.org) A Harris County jury agreed with Houston medical malpractice attorneys Randy Sorrels and Chelsie King Garza that doctors are responsible for the harm that results from their neglect when it awarded Texas' Top Verdict in a medical malpractice case in 2012 to Lauren Williams. The jury awarded Ms. Williams $1,926,069.14 after surgical complications caused the then 39-year-old woman to suffer permanent, life-changing injuries.

The $1.9 million verdict in Williams v. Benge was the largest jury verdict awarded to a victim of medical malpractice in the state of Texas in 2012, according to VerdictSearch as published in Texas Lawyer. That amount included compensation for past and future medical expenses, physical impairment, lost earning capacity and pain and suffering.

Attorneys Randy Sorrels and Chelsie King Garza sought justice on behalf of Ms. Williams at trial. The doctors and medical group involved denied any deviation from the applicable standard of care, but Mr. Sorrels and Ms. Garza convinced the jury otherwise. The legal team asserted that the surgeons involved had committed medical malpractice causing the perforation of internal organs, and that delays in diagnosis and post-operative treatment led to Ms. Williams' permanent change in quality of life.

VerdictSearch has been researching and reporting the nation's top verdicts and settlements for more than 40 years. VerdictSearch annually compiles the Top Texas Verdicts for publication in Texas Lawyer, recognizing the outstanding achievements of trial attorneys across the state on behalf of injured or mistreated Texans. This is the second year in a row that Houston lawyer Randy Sorrels has been recognized for earning a Top Texas Verdict in a medical malpractice case by VerdictSearch.
