Brett Adams Notts County youth soccer coach, notes that the warmer months of the summer season are perfect for children to become involved in fun and physically-active youth sports. However, without distractions presented by school activities, Adams explains that many parents can become overly competitive when it comes to youth sports--even those that are tailored for kids under the age of 10. Not only can parents become too aggressive during practices or gameplay, but some youth sports coaches have a reputation for being too harsh on their junior athletes.

For these reasons, Brett Adams of Notts County highlights a recent article from The Boston Globe that discusses a few ways that adults can gain a proper perspective when it comes to youth sports. Adams encourages parents--and coaches to review these tips--and states, "Athletic learning should take place in a fun environment; putting pressure on your kids will only lead to anxiety and discourage them from going out and expressing themselves freely on or off the field."

Adams explains that The Boston Globe offers a few important things for parents to consider--specifically, what children can get out of simply participating in a recreational sport. For example, the article states, "Sports are a way better way to spend your time than video games or hanging out on the streets; for many kids, sports are what keep them on a good life path." In addition, the article notes that even if a child may not be performing at the top level he or she is still getting exercise.

The Boston Globe adds, "With a third of US kids overweight or obese, we need to get more kids moving. Not only does exercise help kids now, it builds healthy habits for a lifetime." For Brett Adams, Notts County youth team manager, the latter point is one of the most important for parents of child athletes to consider.

"If your child has participated, ran around and had fun, all they need to hear from a parent is how proud you are. The challenge is getting the children on the field if you can do that then they have won regardless of the result or performance," Brett Adams, Notts County professional, concludes.
