BURLINGTON, VT, June 18, 2013 (Press-News.org) Jean Luc Dushime, a photographer and VCAM producer, won the 2013 Hometown Video Award from the Alliance for Community Media. Mr. Dushime's video was shot and edited for the African band A2VT (Africa to Vermont). The song "Winooski, My Town" is dedicated to Winooski, a town in Vermont that is diversifying rapidly with the arrival of immigrants and resettled refugees.
"I have a dream, and VCAM has helped give me the means to pursue it," said Mr. Dushime. As a teenager, Mr. Dushime survived the Rwandan genocide of 1994 and war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo nine years later. He moved to Burlington in 2004. His work focuses on capturing the resiliency of the human soul, documenting social and cultural issues, the effects of migration and integration on small communities, and vice versa. "Everything I've done really comes from my desire to communicate my experience with the world."
Mr. Dushime was helped with his video training by VCAM's Bill Simmon and Matt Goudey. "The Fundamentals of Digital Cinematography workshop is for VCAM users who are looking to up their game by making the transition from basic videography to actual cinematography," said Mr. Simmon. VCAM's free workshop series is designed to help newcomers to VCAM become familiar with the tools and techniques of digital video production.
