John Calvert DDS is committed to helping his patients protect their teeth and gums for years to come. Now, Dr. Calvert is speaking out on a new article that states that dentists have found that excessive diet soda consumption is as bad for teeth as using drugs like meth or crack cocaine. Heavy consumption of these acidic beverages can cause serious and extensive damage to teeth's enamel as time goes on.People who regularly drink vast amounts of diet soda routinely experience tooth erosion, rotting, decay, and other serious types of oral damage. A new study published in a journal entitled General Dentistry explains that the effect that excessive amounts of diet soda has on teeth is just as bad or worse as the impact that hard drugs have on teeth.
Dr. Mohammed Boussiouny, a professor of restorative dentistry at the Temple University School of Dentistry, explains the issues that excessive diet soda habits can cause stating, "You look at it side-to-side with 'meth mouth' or 'coke mouth' and it is startling to see the intensity and extent of damage more or less the same."
The study took a look at a woman in her 30s who drank roughly two liters of soda every day during a three to five year span. Doctors found that this individual suffered from eroded teeth that closely resembled those of a 29-year-old meth addict who had been using drugs for three years. They also looked like the teeth of a man who had an 18-year history of drug abuse. The woman's teeth had taken on a soft and discolored appearance, and dentists were forced to remove all of her natural molars due to the irreparable damage that had occurred.
The woman relied heavily on diet soda throughout the years because she feared that consuming regular cola would lead to weight gain. However, she acknowledged that she knew that there were risks associating with drinking large amounts of artificially sweetened beverages. In addition to this dangerous behavior, this individual went without dental care for two decades. This further exasperated the problems caused by the soda consumption.
While many diet soda drinkers consume their favorite beverages for years with no real consequences, it is not uncommon for extreme oral health concerns such as this one to appear.
John Calvert DDS comments on this issue stating, "Although there are obviously other factors that influence the decay of teeth, the excessive consumption of sodas with their very high acidic content does greatly contribute to the destruction and erosion of tooth enamel. This is something that I have seen an alarming increase in during my 28 years of practice." John Calvert DDS encourages soda drinkers to also consume plenty of water and to brush their teeth carefully after downing a can of their favorite beverage.
