California Dog Attacks Draw Attention to Dangerous Breeds

Two recent serious dog attacks in California bring to light the importance of legal solutions for communities and personal injury victims.

Recent attacks by dogs on humans in California -- both frightening, one fatal -- underscore the importance of owner control of dangerous breeds. Both maulings involved pit bulls, and the second also involved a boxer-mastiff mix. These incidents show that aggressive dogs can do severe and sudden damage with their sharp teeth, powerful necks and tenacious jaws.

In early July, three visitors to Golden Gate Park were attacked by two apparently stray dogs, a male pit bull and a mixed-breed female mastiff. A 71-year-old woman suffered severe bite wounds, and the pit bull bit off a piece of her leg that doctors labored to reattach. Both dogs were later rounded up by the city's Animal Care and Control, and the dogs were euthanized several days later.

Even more horrific is the late July fatal attack on a two-year-old Concord boy, who was attacked by three pit bulls in his step-grandfather's garage. Those dogs, along with two others apparently kept by the family as pets, were euthanized and the elderly dog owner was arrested. One county board member in the area has since introduced an ordinance that would require spaying or neutering of all pit bulls.

Holding Negligent California Pet Owners Accountable

Dog bites don't have to be serious or fatal to inflict major harm to a victim, particularly elderly and very young victims. The trauma of a vicious dog attack, along with enduring scars and memories, can have a terrible effect on animal attack victims. Compensation can often be obtained from a pet owner's homeowners insurance or other coverage.

For those who need to pursue further action, a consultation with an experienced personal injury lawyer can provide a full understanding of the legal options available. Punitive damages may be available in certain cases, and a trial attorney can help you assess the full extent of your injuries.
