While many industries depend on large commercial "big rig" trucks to transport their goods through Arizona and across the country, these massive automobiles can be a threat to drivers on streets and highways. In fact, in Arizona alone, 65 people were killed in accidents involving tractor trailers in 2011 according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association. Nationwide, 3,608 people lost their lives from tractor-trailer accidents in 2011. Many states are taking action to reduce the number of big rig accidents and to educate drivers on how to safely maneuver around these trucks.

Reasons for big rig collisions

There are many reasons why big rig collisions take place. Some are similar to the reasons for passenger vehicle collisions, and include the following:
-Driving while drowsy
-Driving while intoxicated
-Distracted driving
-Semi-truck malfunctions
-Bad weather
-Poor visibility
-Inability to stop quickly
-Improper turns
-Speeding

While truck drivers are often responsible for accidents involving passenger cars, other drivers may also be responsible for driving unsafely around semi-trucks.

Tips for driving around commercial trucks

It is important to realize that commercial trucks drive differently than passenger vehicles. If you understand their driving characteristics you will be able to drive more safely around them. According to the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, drivers should be aware of the following when driving around large semi-trucks:
-Keep your distance. Although it is dangerous to tailgate any vehicle while driving at high speeds on the freeway, it is especially dangerous to tailgate large trucks. The height of the truck may block your view of the upcoming road, and if you are tailgating you may not be able to stop quickly when you need to.
-Don't cut in front of a truck. Large trucks require a longer period of time to stop than passenger cars. While a passenger car may be able to slam on its brakes and stop quickly, a large truck does not have the capability to do so.
-Be prepared for wide turns. Remember, trucks making a right-hand turn may need to swing left in order to make the turn. A truck making a left-hand turn may need to swing a wide right before actually turning left. Keep this information in mind and give them plenty of room to make their turn.
-Stay out of the blind spot. When passing a large truck, be sure to do so quickly in order to stay out of its blind spot. The truck driver may not see you and may switch lanes prematurely.

By following these simple safety tips, you may be able to prevent a potential big rig accident and save lives.
