ATLANTA, GA, February 28, 2014 (Press-News.org) The engine crankshaft online dealer, APM Engine Parts, talks about the consequences of using oil and fuel that contains lower concentrations of sulfur. Due to a growing international emphasis on the creation of eco-friendly products, strict environmental regulations have forced crude oil manufacturers to strip a large amount of sulfur from the final product, whether it is motor oil or gasoline/diesel made from refined crude oil.
Why Engines Are Suffering From Low-sulfur Oil
While there is no doubting that this move is a positive one for the environment (less sulfur and other additives means a reduction in carbon emissions), the same cannot be said for engines. One of the main problems associated with this change in the manufacturing process is oil that does not lubricate as well.
Since the key function of motor oil is to minimize friction between moving engine parts, it is easy to see that modern fuel types like ultra-low sulfur diesel can also lead to premature mechanical wear. Though fuel is not meant to lubricate, sulfur has another beneficial property that drivers are no longer getting: its anti-corrosive properties.
According to David DeBuc, Vice President of APM Engine Parts, "Sulfur acts as a barrier against chemicals that can interact negatively with the metal surface of critical engine parts like fuel injectors, carburetors, etc. The rise of ethanol-based fuel has only served to increase these complications, as ethanol is highly corrosive towards Zinc, steel and aluminum."
Fortunately, there are a number of additives available that help counter the harmful effects of low-sulfur oil and fuel.

The Space Double-Whammy: Less Gravity, More Radiation
2014-02-28
Astronauts floating weightlessly in the International Space Station may appear carefree, but years of research have shown that microgravity causes changes to the human body. Spaceflight also means exposure to more radiation. Together, microgravity and radiation exposure add up to pose serious health risks. But research is not only making space safer for astronauts, it's helping to improve health care for the Earth-bound as well.
One of the effects of space radiation is damage to DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, the genetic material in nearly every cell of our bodies. ...

High-calorie feeding may slow progression of ALS
2014-02-28
Increasing the number of calories consumed by patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) may be a relatively simple way of extending their survival. A phase 2 clinical trial led by Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) physicians found that ALS patients receiving a high-calorie, high-carbohydrate tube-feeding formula lived longer with fewer adverse events than participants who received a standard formula designed maintain their weight. While the small size of the trial indicates results need to be interpreted with caution, the authors are optimistic that improved ...
Why and how anti-retroviral therapy works even against HIV cell-to-cell transmission
2014-02-28
The discovery of direct cell-to-cell transmission of HIV, and the finding that some anti-HIV drugs don't seem active against virus that spreads that way, have caused questions and concern. A study published on February 27th in PLOS Pathogens tested a panel of anti-HIV drugs for their ability to suppress cell-to-cell transmission of the virus. The results reveal differences between different drugs, explain why and how anti-retroviral therapy (ART) does work, and have implications for the prevention of drug resistance as well as the development of new effective anti-HIV drugs. ...
