Why Engines Are Suffering From Low-sulfur Oil
While there is no doubting that this move is a positive one for the environment (less sulfur and other additives means a reduction in carbon emissions), the same cannot be said for engines. One of the main problems associated with this change in the manufacturing process is oil that does not lubricate as well.
Since the key function of motor oil is to minimize friction between moving engine parts, it is easy to see that modern fuel types like ultra-low sulfur diesel can also lead to premature mechanical wear. Though fuel is not meant to lubricate, sulfur has another beneficial property that drivers are no longer getting: its anti-corrosive properties.
According to David DeBuc, Vice President of APM Engine Parts, "Sulfur acts as a barrier against chemicals that can interact negatively with the metal surface of critical engine parts like fuel injectors, carburetors, etc. The rise of ethanol-based fuel has only served to increase these complications, as ethanol is highly corrosive towards Zinc, steel and aluminum."
