The South by Southwest festival is a unique concert experience. Held in Austin, Texas, the festival boasts a "unique mash-up of music, culture, technology and buzz." However, a recent article in The New York Times voices concern after a tragic drunk driving accident led to the death of two and injured over 20 attending the festival. The report examined whether or not the festival had grown too large, making safety a concern for those who attend the event.
Although the report focused on this particular concert, lessons can be applied to similar events throughout the country. From state fairs to concerts, venues with large events pose a unique mix of hazards. Those who attend these events could find themselves unexpectedly injured, as was the case in Austin.
More on the South by Southwest crash
The accident occurred after police attempted to pull over a driver suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. The driver sped off when the officers attempted the stop, going the wrong way down a one-way street before crashing through a police barricade and striking a bicycle, moped, taxi and pedestrians attending the festival. ABC News reported that police claim the suspect accelerated as he approached the crowd. Enforcement officers claim he was using these tactics to attempt to avoid being pulled over.
After his vehicle crashed, the driver allegedly attempted to flee on foot before being detained and arrested by officers. A report by CNN notes that the suspect had to be Tasered before police could take him into custody.
Lessons for Connecticut car accident victims
The man responsible for the accident will likely face multiple criminal charges, potentially including aggravated assault by a vehicle and capital murder. In addition to criminal charges, civil charges may also be filed by victims and surviving family members. Comparable charges could apply to similar situations in Connecticut.
As in Texas, it is illegal in Connecticut to operate a vehicle with a blood alcohol content (bac) of 0.08 or higher. If a drunk driving accident leads to the death or serious injury of another, second-degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle or second degree assault with a motor vehicle charges could apply.
Legal counsel can help
Those who are injured by the reckless or negligent act of another are likely eligible to receive compensation. This can help cover the cost of medical treatment, rehabilitation and potentially lost wages. Determining the right course of action after an injury can be difficult. As a result, it is wise to contact an experienced Connecticut DUI victim attorney. This legal professional will review your case and be able to better ensure your legal rights and any potential remedies are protected.

Prenups get a bad rap. Thanks to movies, television and media coverage, many people are convinced that prenuptial agreements (also called "prenups," "premarital agreements" or "antenuptial agreements") are only used by very wealthy people to wrongfully keep a less-pecuniary spouse from getting a fair share of marital assets in the event of a divorce. Some assume that prenups have no relevance ...
