Michael Mitrow is a successful entrepreneur who has founded three companies over the last twenty years. One of those companies was named to Inc. Magazine's Inc. 500, as one of the 500 fastest-growing firms in the country. But when he isn't attending board meetings, Michael Mitrow loves competing in saltwater fishing tournaments. It is a fantastic way to recharge his batteries, he says. Michael Milrow's favorite competition involves fishing for blue marlin, white marlin, and sailfish.
Michael Mitrow enjoys sport fishing so much that he once owned his own boat, the Bac-In-Five, a 49,000 pound, fifty-three-foot boat featuring a proven Jarrett Bay hull design and a low-profile superstructure. During competition season you can find Michael Mitrow fishing up and down the east coast.
During sport fishing tournaments, expert fisherman like Michael Mitrow compete for prizes based on the total weight of a specific type of fish over a set amount of time. Michael Mitrow has caught a lot of blue marlin during competitions. Blue marlins are prized game fish in tournaments. "I really enjoyed the challenge of trying to bring in a big fish," he said.
Michael Mitrow and his team must travel several miles out to sea to catch a white marlin. Because white marlin can weight up to 65 pounds they are considered rare, and are prized catches during fishing tournaments. Michael Mitrow has been lucky enough to catch several white marlins along the east coast. In spite of the name, white marlin can range in color from dark blue to deep brown.
Sailfish are another prized game fish in tournaments. Even expert fishermen, like Michael Mitrow, have difficulty catching sailfish because of their incredible speed. Sailfish have been clocked at speeds over sixty-eight miles per hour. Because of their classic appearance and the difficulty of reeling one in, sailfish are what sport fishermen dream of catching. During competitions, Michael Mitrow attempts to catch this billfish that is normally blue to gray in color and has a dorsal fin that can stretch the entire length of the body. The dorsal fin can stand straight up on end to make the fish appear larger than it really is.
Michael Mitrow says there is nothing quite like catching a big one. "After hours of sitting with no bite on your line, the adrenaline rush when you see a 200 pound sailfish on the end of your line is indescribable," he says. "I enjoy the camaraderie and competition that comes along with entering sport fishing tournaments. I have found so many amazing places along the east coast to fish and I am looking forward to competing in my next tournament."
The fishing techniques that Michael Mitrow and his team will use varies, depending on the kind of fish they are attempting to catch. When fishing for marlin, the use of live bait, such as mackerel and yellowtail has been popular. Artificial lures have also been effective when attempting to catch marlin. For many other types of billfish, Michael Mitrow and his team will use a trolling technique in which dead bait of up to 20 pounds is pulled slowly behind the boat.
