Dan Jensen Supports No Shave November

The Jensen Group is taking part in a cancer-prevention effort.

2014-04-18
HERMOSA BEACH, CA, April 18, 2014 (Press-News.org) Dan Jensen believes an important part of his business success is giving back to the community. He has always supported worthy causes, and in late 2013 lent his support to the "No Shave November" event, which raises money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. The Prostate Cancer Foundation is the world's leading philanthropic organization funding and accelerating prostate cancer research.

Cancer research is serious business, but there is an element of fun to No Shave November. Agents in the Jensen Group, both men and women, pledged not to shave for the entire month to demonstrate their support in the fight against the disease. All that new new hair was a whimsical expression of a very serious issue: prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society. It affects one of every six men. "We chose the Prostate Cancer Foundation as our charity because the foundation has raised over $500 million for research and has funded more than 1,600 research projects at nearly 200 institutions in seventeen countries," Dan Jensen said.

The American Cancer Society's projections for prostate cancer in the United States for 2014 are eye-opening. About 233,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed, the Society says, and about 29,480 men will die from the disease. They say that one of every seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetimes. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind only lung cancer.

The ultimate goal of the Prostate Cancer Foundation is to prevent men from ever developing prostate cancer. "The foundation has been instrumental in developing five new drugs that extend the lives of men with metastatic prostate cancer," Dan Jensen said. Officials with the foundation say promising new treatments are in development, and significant progress has been made.

Organizers of No-Shave November say their goal is to grow awareness by growing hair, which many cancer patients lose. They urge participants to have fun with it; to let it grow wild and free. "Donate the money you usually spend on shaving and grooming for a month to educate about cancer prevention, save lives, and aid those fighting the battle," they say on their web site. They tell men to grow a beard or cultivate a mustache, and tell women to let their legs get "mangly," and to skip that waxing appointment. They acknowledge that the hairy look may not be for everyone. "If you're not ready to sport a new shaggy look, consider donating anyway to support the cause."

A big part of No Shave November is raising awareness, and encouraging men to get involved. Organizers hope to increase early cancer detection, diagnosis and effective treatments, and ultimately reduce the number of preventable deaths. They urge all men to have annual check-ups, and to be aware of any family history of cancer. They also urge men to adopt a healthier lifestyle as a key to prevention.

"Please join us in this very important fight against cancer," Dan Jensen said, as the event was gearing up. "I look forward to all of you supporting this important fight. Let's have fun with it."
