By now most of us have heard the story about the famous iron-man quarterback who was allegedly sending explicit images to a female employee of the team, when they both worked for the team. This is an example of what is known as "sexting.""Sexting" is generally thought of as the act of sending explicit text messages or pictures through one's cell phone. However, the very adult activity of sexting isn't just limited to adults; many teens have admitted to explicit text messages.
A 2008 survey conducted by the National Campaign to Support Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy indicates that this type of behavior is somewhat common amongst teens -- reporting that about 20 percent of teens had participated in sexting.
When teens participate in the very adult-natured sexting they sometimes end up facing the very adult charges of creating or possessing child pornography.
In an effort to provide parents piece of mind and control over aspects of their children's communications, Apple has patented a new technology that would filter and prevent children from receiving explicit text messages on their iPhone. The technology would filter messages based on the age and grade or learning level of the child and the offensiveness of the message.
Apple says that its new technology is different from other available filter applications in that its technology does not block message with pre-determined offensive words, but also considers abbreviated versions of offensive language and the age of the child.
The thought of participating in sexting may strike at the inner modesty of most, Apple's new technology is a step it the right direction, but as it currently is would not help teens or others in a similar position of the aforementioned quarterback, as Apple's technology isn't able to block explicit images, only text.
