APPLE VALLEY, CA, January 20, 2011

Someday the residents of Apple Valley may drive on roads they helped create through a tire-recycling event the town has scheduled. Apple Valley residents are encouraged to turn in their old tires during this free event. Each person can bring up to 9 tires to be recycled free of charge (tires from businesses will not be accepted) from 9:00am-3:00pm on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at Lions Park located at Outer Highway 18 South (between Flathead Rd and Dale Evans Pkwy) Apple Valley, CA 92307.

"Last year, more than 6,200 tires were collected in Apple Valley and this year we are hoping to do the same or even exceed that amount," said Jim Andersen, Code Enforcement Manager. "With every tire brought in, the community is doing their part for the environment, and not only keeping our city safe from the dangers and health hazards of stockpiled tires, but putting those tires to a better use."

Tires collected from the event may end up as "RAC" or "TDA" in civil engineering projects within the county. Rubberized asphalt concrete (RAC) is pavement material made with grounded waste tires that is more durable, safer and quieter than traditional asphalt. TDA, or tire-derived aggregate, is the second largest reuse of tires in the U.S. and helps solve a number of engineering problems where, cost-effective lightweight and free-draining materials are needed.

CalRecycle, also known as the Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery, just launched a campaign called "Green Roads" to raise awareness about these products and promote the use of RAC and TDA throughout the state.
