Stanford bone specialist Joy Wu elected as Endocrine Society's 2027-2028 president

Wu, who leads endocrinology at Stanford and studies skeletal stem cell therapies and cancer metastasis to bone, will begin her term after ENDO 2026.

Joy Wu knows bones. As a board-certified endocrinologist at Stanford University School of Medicine, she specializes in treating osteoporosis and other bone and mineral diseases, with particular expertise in protecting skeletal health for patients at risk of bone loss from cancer therapies. Her lab studies stem cell therapies for bone formation and the prevention of cancer metastasis to bone.

Now she will lead the largest global organization of hormone researchers. The Endocrine Society, with more than 18,000 members in 133 countries, elected Wu as its 2027-2028 president. She will serve as president-elect for a year starting in June 2026 -- following ENDO 2026, the Society's annual meeting in Chicago -- before assuming the presidency in June 2027.

Research and institutional roles

Wu holds the Gerald M. Reaven, MD Professorship of Endocrinology and serves as chief of the Division of Endocrinology and vice chair of basic science in the Department of Medicine at Stanford. Her research program bridges basic and translational science, focusing on skeletal development and the bone marrow hematopoietic niche -- the microenvironment within bone marrow where blood cells are produced.

Her current laboratory work pursues two lines of investigation: developing stem cell therapies that promote bone formation, and understanding how cancers spread to bone with an eye toward preventing those metastases. The second area has direct clinical relevance for the cancer patients she treats, many of whom face skeletal complications from both their disease and its treatment.

Society involvement

Wu has been an active member of the Endocrine Society, serving on its Board of Directors and multiple committees and task forces. She was a member of the Society's Hypercalcemia of Malignancy Guideline Writing Committee and currently serves on its Bone and Mineral Special Interest Group.

The Endocrine Society publishes peer-reviewed journals, hosts ENDO (described as the world's largest endocrine meeting), and advocates for evidence-based health policies on behalf of the global endocrine community. The organization covers a broad clinical and research portfolio including diabetes, obesity, infertility, bone health, and hormone-related cancers.
