GREENBELT, MD, February 14, 2011 (Press-News.org) BizziBid.com, a nationwide home improvement and remodeling website (http://www.bizzibid.com), is reporting a significant uptick in activity for January and early February 2011. The number of homeowners requesting licensed remodeling contractors and free home improvement estimates this month far exceeds the number seeking home improvements and remodeling information through the site a year ago.
Home Improvement Tops the List
While BizziBid connects consumers to contractors for a number of purposes - siding installation, air conditioning maintenance, landscaping, and more - the upswing in requests especially reflects a recovery in the home improvement market: basement remodeling, kitchen remodeling, window replacements, roofing and more. And as website owner Tony Scuderi observes, the numbers bode well for all of 2011. "The numbers so far this year hint at what's to come. We're seeing estimate requests not only from people who are ready to go, but also from homeowners who plan to remodel later in the year."
RMI Picks up Nationwide
Data from BizziBid.com is consistent with home remodeling indices from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). NAHB maintains quarterly Remodeling Market Index (RMI) statistics for all regions of the United States, thereby assessing homeowners' plans to make major and minor home additions and repairs. The group found that future market indicators grew significantly in all regions but the western U.S. for the last quarter of 2010 after having dropped during the first, second, and third quarters. Future market indicators take into account calls for bids, amount of work scheduled for the next three months, the backlog of remodeling projects, and appointments made for new proposals.
NAHB Chairman Bob Peterson noted that although numbers may have dropped in the west, the projects underway there and nationwide tend to be larger-scale than those of 2010. The association's chief economist, David Crowe, added that remodeling nationwide is fueled by anticipated improvements in the job market and the general economy.
Remodeling Preferred to Building New Homes
American housing regions trade off building new homes and remodeling the old. Economists have attributed an apparent fourth-quarter 2010 recovery in the new housing market to rapid growth only in western states, where anticipated remodeling rates are lower. Elsewhere, new home sales are expected to remain flat throughout 2011. It seems that until the national economy is again vibrant, Americans will find it worthwhile to convert old homes into dream homes rather than build from the ground up.

Common insecticide used in homes associated with delayed mental development of young children
2011-02-14
February 9, 2011 -- When the EPA phased out the widespread residential use of chlorpyrifos and other organophosphorus (OP) insecticides in 2000-2001 because of risks to child neurodevelopment, these compounds were largely replaced with pyrethroid insecticides. But the safety of these replacement insecticides remained unclear, as they had never been evaluated for long-term neurotoxic effects after low-level exposure. In the first study to examine the effects of these compounds on humans and the first evaluation of their potential toxicity to the developing fetal brain, ...

They hope the findings in 171 overweight 7- to 11-year-olds – all sedentary when the study started - gives educators the evidence they need to ensure that regular, vigorous physical activity is a part of every school day, said Dr. Catherine Davis, clinical health psychologist at GHSU's Georgia Prevention Institute and corresponding author on the study in Health Psychology

Looking at a tough hill to climb? Depends on your point of view
2011-02-14
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- People tend to overestimate the steepness of slopes – and psychologists studying the phenomenon have made a discovery that refutes common ideas about how we perceive inclines in general.
For more than a decade, researchers thought that our judgment was biased by our fatigue or fear of falling, explained Dennis Shaffer, associate professor of psychology at Ohio State University's Mansfield campus. We perceive climbing or descending hills as difficult or dangerous, so when we look at an incline, our view is clouded by the expected physical exertion or ...
New evolutionary research disproves living missing link theories
2011-02-14
This release is available in French.
Evolution is not a steady march towards ever more sophisticated beings and therefore the search for the living "missing links" is pointless, according to findings published by a team of researchers led by Dr. Hervé Philippe of the Université de Montréal's Department of Biochemistry. "Aristotle was the first to classify organisms – from the least to the most sophisticated. Darwin's theory of evolution continued this idea, with the concept of a hierarchy of evolution. This way of thinking has led researchers and skeptics alike to look ...
