February 17, 2011 (Press-News.org) Students around the world who are seeking higher education may be able to study in America by applying for an F1 student visa. The F1 visa is what is known as a "non-immigrant" visa. This type of visa is designed to meet the needs of people who are temporarily visiting the U.S. but do not intend to become permanent residents.
The requirements for student visas are not as rigorous as those for employment-based visas or family visas, but it is still necessary to meet every one of them before a visa application will be granted. Eligibility for a student visa consists of:
- Enrollment full time at a secondary school at the university/college level or equivalent (or at least have an offer of study from an American educational facility)
- Having a valid passport
- Being able to sufficiently cover all costs associated with enrollment in and completion of a degree program
- Being fluent in English (or enrolled in an immersion course that will quickly lead to proficiency
- Having the intent to return to their country of origin after the visa expires
Student-based visas also do not have a universal rate of expiration like some other visas. F1 visas are valid for the entire duration of the proposed academic program, provided that the student obeys all visa conditions and stays in school.
While it may be easier to obtain a student visa than some other visas, the process can still be overwhelming to someone not familiar with bureaucratic red tape. As with any visa application, seeking an F1 visa is easier with an experienced immigration law attorney by your side.
