Tom Turnbull Named New Chief Operating Officer for Volunteers of America

Nonprofit veteran will oversee national affordable housing and health care operations

ALEXANDRIA, VA, February 24, 2011

Volunteers of America, one of the nation's oldest and largest human service organizations, announced today that Tom Turnbull has been named to its newly-created chief operating officer position. A more than 30-year veteran of the organization, Turnbull will oversee the organization's national health care and housing division, which includes hundreds of properties and services that serve more than 30,000 people.

"Tom rose to the top of the search due to his extensive 30-plus years experience with Volunteers of America at both the affiliate and national level, which has given him the leadership vision to understand our organizational complexity and the challenges we face as an organization," said Volunteers of America National President and CEO Mike King. "In addition to Tom's strong background in our organization's financial areas, Tom also understands our affiliate structure and the need to integrate our efforts as an organization."

As COO, Turnbull will ensure the continued quality of Volunteers of America's affordable housing and heath care programs, seek out new opportunities for revenue growth and foster greater cooperation between Volunteers of America's national office and its 36 local affiliates in the operation of these services.

Turnbull has worked for Volunteers of America since 1978, starting out in various leadership roles with the organization's Texas affiliate before moving to the national office in 1988. Previous positions with the national organization include vice president of affiliate financial services, senior vice president of housing finance and chief financial officer.

"I am honored to have been selected for this position and view it as a cap to my career with this great organization," Turnbull said. "I am excited about the future that lies ahead for all of Volunteers of America."

Volunteers of America is one of the largest nonprofit developers and providers of affordable housing in the country. The organization owns and operates more than 320 affordable housing properties in more than 40 states and Puerto Rico. Its nationwide portfolio includes 16,000 affordable housing units that house nearly 25,000 people each year. In the area of healthcare, Volunteers of America is one of the nation's largest nonprofit providers of affordable senior housing, skilled nursing care and assisted living for seniors.

A resident of Washington, DC, Turnbull earned a bachelor of business administration from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and is also a certified public accountant.
