DORAL, FL, March 02, 2011 (Press-News.org) A new product from EnviroGreen Global Solutions, Inc., could prevent future incidents of food-borne illnesses such as the recent occurrence of Listeria in California which has prompted a multi-state recall of broccoli products, according to William Billows, Ph.D., Chief Development Officer for EGS. The Associated Press reported late on Sunday that Taylor Farms Pacific and Safeway had announced a voluntary, precautionary recall of all broccoli products distributed in California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington "after a random test by agricultural officials came up positive for the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes."
Dr. Billows explains, "Produce treated with Preserv Post Harvest Wash during processing will kill over 99.99% of bacteria such as Listeria monocytogenes. While there are many products designed to do this, Preserv is the only solution which provides extended protection -- to continue eliminating these pathogens -- for up to twenty one days after application. In contrast to more commonplace interventions, Preserv is not a contact killer. Our product completely and fatally interrupts the bacteria's metabolism, and continues to do so on a protracted basis."
According to The Centers for Disease Control and Protection, as many as 500 people per year die from listeriosis. It is particularly dangerous for children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems, and can also cause miscarriages or premature labor in pregnant women.
"Processors strive to maintain food safety standards," notes Dr. Billows. "When an outbreak of this gravity occurs, it has a drastic ripple effect on an entire industry. For this reason, we are redoubling our efforts to introduce Preserv to the produce industry."
Preserv not only has been shown to provide 50 times the residual protection of chlorine on produce and other raw agricultural commodities in laboratory tests, it is safe (EPA-registered with "exemption from tolerance" status for human consumption), complies with organic standards and is cost-effective. Preserv is simple to use without the need for costly equipment or retooled infrastructure. Dr. Billows adds, "Our compliance with organic standards has just been established. The organic produce industry is particularly excited about the possibility of having a uniquely powerful solution to bacterial contamination problems that is friendly to the health of their employees, the public and the environment in general." Researchers from Hebrew U., US discover how mercury gets into fish we eat
2011-03-01
Jerusalem, February 27, 2011 -- Researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the US have discovered the mechanism whereby dangerous mercury eventually finds its way into the fish we eat from the open seas and oceans.
The researchers, Prof. Menachem Luria from the Fredy and Nadine Herrmann Institute of Earth Sciences at the Hebrew University and Dr. Daniel Obrist of the University of Nevada, found that "passive" mercury normally found in the atmosphere is converted into an "active," oxidized form in the presence of bromine. The passive mercury is generally ...
