ROCHESTER, March 11, 2011
Keep them active, but keep them healthy! Rochester Community PTA Council is hosting a health and fitness seminar for the Rochester School District. Michigan Sports & Spine Centers and CORE Sports Fitness will be presenting on the topics of Concussions, Hydration and Nutrition. This free event will be held on March 22nd, 7:00 p.m. at West Middle School, 500 Old Perch Road, Rochester Hills MI. The discussions will be geared towards student athletes, parents, coaches, trainers, professionals or anyone who is involved in sport and recreational activities. With the increase in youth participation in sports and the additional pressure to play on that higher level team, these topics become very important to understand in order to keep and maintain good health today, and in their years to come.
A study from Hasbro Children's Hospital finds visits to emergency departments for concussions that occurred during organized team sports have increased dramatically over a 10-year period, and appear to be highest in ice hockey, football and soccer. The number of sports-related concussions is highest in high school-aged athletes, but the number in younger athletes is significant and rising. The Sports Concussion Institute estimates 10 percent of athletes in contact sports suffer a concussion each season.
Dr. Jeff S. Pierce and Dr. Tarek Hadla of Michigan Sports & Spine will provide you with information that will raise awareness on the seriousness of these topics. They will enlighten you with the newest research on concussion management and prevention. They will also discuss:
• When is it safe for athletes to return to sports after a concussion?
• What are the common, but missed signs and symptoms of a concussion?
• Energy drink, sports drinks or water; which is the right time for each?
• What should I eat before and after my sporting events?
Concussions can be caused by a fall, a bump or blow to the head or body during contact sports and can happen even if the athlete does not lose consciousness. Nearly 3.8 million sports- and recreation-related concussions occur each year in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and these numbers are on the rise as athletes are becoming more competitive and starting at an earlier age.
