LateRooms.com - Keep Your Eye on the Ball at Yiloga Tiwi Footy Exhibition in Melbourne

Aussie Rules fans can swot up on the sport's influence on a small indigenous community located in the Timor Sea.

2011-03-16
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA, March 16, 2011 (Press-News.org) Aussie Rules has become the heart of a new exhibition at Melbourne's National Sports Museum.

The Yiloga! Tiwi Footy exhibition opens on April 11th 2011 and will explore the influence of the Australian Football League (AFL) on a small indigenous community located in the Timor Sea.

Margaret Birtley, general manager of the National Sports Museum, said in a statement that the exhibition is colourful, exciting and intended to boost the understanding of the Tiwi culture and its association with the AFL.

Memorabilia, photographs and team kits will be on display to illustrate the impact the game has had on the islands.

Michael Long and Maurice Rioli are players who originated from the Timor Sea region and entertained crowds with their talent over the years.

Brother John Pye is credited with introducing AFL to the area some 60 years ago and he said the sport has brought people together, giving even those from different clans a common ground.

Entrance to the Yiloga! Tiwi Footy exhibition is included in the general admission fee for the National Sports Museum.

LateRooms.com.au can recommend an array of Melbourne hotels that may be perfect for sports fans looking to book cheap accommodation close to the museum.
