INDUSTRY, CA, March 27, 2011 (Press-News.org) There's a sense of excitement brewing in Suffolk, Virginia's skateboarding community as the City prepares to officially open its two new concrete skate spots designed and built by Spohn Ranch Skateparks. As landscaping and site amenities complete the finishing touches of the pocket parks at Lake Meade and Bennett's Creek, the City is set to celebrate the overwhelming success of the project with a ribbon cutting ceremony, giveaways and skateboarding demonstrations by the local 17th Street Skate Crew.
Spohn Ranch was commissioned with the design/build of two skate spots in late 2010. After engaging with local youth for a sense of the features that inspired their skating, we applied the City's budget towards a 3,000 square foot park at Bennett's Creek Park and a 5,000 square foot plaza-style park at Lake Meade Park. Originally slated for metal ramps, we converted both parks into concrete wonderlands that would complement the creative spirit of skateboarding while enduring the test of time. After a stretch of poor weather at the end of 2010 and early 2011, Spohn Ranch's dedicated crew of professional skatepark builders executed grading, earthwork, shotcrete and cast-in-place concrete construction - transforming the vision of Suffolk's skaters into a living and breathing work of art.
Spohn Ranch is a nationally-recognized contractor specializing in the design and construction of cutting-edge skateable landscapes. Spohn Ranch's deep roots in skateboarding originate with the first X-Games in 1995, when they were hired by ESPN to design and build the competition courses. After launching skateboarding into the mainstream with the X-Games, Spohn Ranch has helped hundreds of communities across the globe achieve their skatepark dreams.
