The ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event is due to run until Sunday May 8th at the Spanish capital's new Caja Magica stadium, also known as the Magic Box.

It was expanded to include female players for the first time, with Russia's Dinara Safina picking up the first WTA title at the event and Aravane Rezai of France triumphing last year.

World number one Rafael Nadal is the reigning men's champion in Madrid, having defeated Roger Federer in the 2010 final.

More than 184,000 people turned up to watch the action at last year's tournament and a similar number are expected this time around.

Tickets for the event vary according to the day, with prices for the opening sessions on April 29th ranging from EUR16 to EUR21 (GBP14.10 and GBP18.50). Fans planning to attend on finals day can expect to pay between EUR75 and EUR138.
