Rosendin Electric Takes the Lead in Training Next Generation of Project Managers through Associated Schools of Construction Program

Bay Area Electrical Contractor Creates On-site Training Program for Construction Management Majors as Part of ASC Student Competition

2011-04-08
SAN JOSE, CA, April 08, 2011 (Press-News.org) Rosendin Electric, the nation's largest private electrical contractor and a 100% employee-owned company, is working to ensure that the next generation of electrical project managers have the necessary expertise and receive the right training before they even enter the job market. Rosendin Electric is working closely with construction management students from six universities to help them prepare for the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Competition, which attracts the most promising construction management students from university programs across the nation.

Every year, ASC sponsors the Annual ASC Student Competition where students from Region 6 and 7 compete for a trophy and monetary prize. To win, each team of six students must complete a complex construction problem, preparing a comprehensive proposal for a design-build construction project. Until recently, the competition hadn't provided a problem specific to electrical construction, but when the ASC added an electrical construction problem in 2008, Rosendin Electric stepped in with a comprehensive training program designed to help students by applying practical experience and expertise to address their design-build problem.

"Traditionally we have seen a shortage of qualified project managers," said Richard Wilder, Human Resources Manager for Rosendin Electric. "With the ASC program, we get to train the next generation of project managers using our own best practices. And we know that the construction management programs are sending the best and the brightest students to compete, so we get to teach the cream of the crop. This is a great program that increases the skill level for the entire industry."

Rosendin Electric has worked with students from Arizona State University, Boise State University, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California State University, Chico, California State University, Sacramento, and Purdue University. The company hosts students and professors in a full-day of training at Rosendin Electric's San Jose headquarters, offering expert advice and training on project management, estimating, contracts, manpower, safety protocols, and other issues related to the proposed construction problem. Since the students undertake the ASC Construction Competition in their spare time with their own money, Rosendin Electric also pays for their hotel stay during the on-site training.

The Western Region Competition attracts 1,200 students from 70 schools, as well as 35 corporate sponsors. With the help of Rosendin Electric's training, this year's electrical competition for Regions 6 and 7 was won by CSU Sacramento and CSU Chico took third place. The winners were announced February 8 at the ASC Regional Exhibition and Career Fair held in Sparks, Nevada.

"Executives from our company devote a lot of time and energy to this program, studying the construction question and preparing instruction material for the students," Wilder added. "We all recognize that some of these students may be working for us some day, and others will end up working with our contractor partners. It's in everyone's best interest to see that they get off on the right foot, with the right tools, and know-how."
