Exlar Roller Screw Technology Added to MEAF Machinery to Enhance Performance
2011-04-11
MINNETONKA, MN, April 11, 2011 (Press-News.org) Exlar's roller screw actuator technology aids MEAF machinery in providing higher possible mould forces and a smoother motion profile along with long service life.

Application Challenge:
Providing higher possible mould forces and a smoother motion profile along with long service life was the goal for MEAF Machinery while designing their new KSM600 high capacity thermoforming machine. This machine, utilizing air and plug-assisted forming, enables very accurate control of the wall thickness of the plastic to form ribs and contours, resulting in a final stableplastic product.

Exlar Solution:
Exlar's roller screw actuator technology was chosen over less capable linear motion solutions for this application. Ball screw average life expectancy would not meet the service requirements of the KSM600 machine. Pneumatic cylinders could not produce a sufficiently high force and stiffness for pressing and rotating. By choosing two Exlar FT60 actuators and one GSX60 integrated actuator, MEAF replaced the pneumatic plug drive and the cam system for opening and closing the mould. Not only were the objectives of long life and increased load met, but an electric cam profile provided by the Exlar actuators resulted in a smoother motion profile.

Exlar Products:
FT60 Force tube actuators and GSX60 integrated actuators were used to replace the cam system. The Exlar Linear Actuator Advantage with Planetary Roller Screw Technology
- Millions of cycles without re-lubrication or maintenance
- Roller screws offer 15 times longer life than ball screws
- Less noise than other motion technologies
- Smooth motion
- Less energy consumption than fluid power with electric actuation
- Accurate and repeatable positioning
- Wide variety of mounting styles
- High cycle rates
- Multiple stroke lengths

Dr. Larissa Shimoda to discuss mechanisms of hypoxic pulmonary hypertension

2011-04-11
WASHINGTON, DC – When muscles and organs are deprived of an adequate supply of oxygen--a condition called hypoxia--the body's usual responses include increased circulation and a slight drop in blood pressure in the blood vessels serving the affected tissue. However, the blood vessels in the lungs react differently: blood pressure in the lungs rises, often with deleterious effects on the lungs' tissue and the heart. Larissa A. Shimoda, PhD, Associate Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Md., has dedicated her research to ...

Increased life expectancy discourages religious participation

2011-04-11
Churches will continue to attract older congregations as increasing life expectancy encourages people to put off involvement in religion, according to new research. The study, by Dr Elissaios Papyrakis at the University of East Anglia and Dr Geethanjali Selvaretnam from the University of St Andrews in the UK, suggests that religious organisations need to do more to highlight the social and spiritual benefits of participation in religion in present day life if they are to increase congregation sizes and attract people of all ages, particularly young people. Flu helps spread pneumonia

2011-04-11
Bacteria that cause pneumonia and meningitis are only able to spread when individuals are infected with flu, says a scientist reporting at the Society for General Microbiology's Spring Conference in Harrogate. The work could have implications for the management of influenza pandemics and could help reduce incidence of pneumococcal infections in very young children, who are more susceptible to disease. Streptococcus pneumoniae normally lives harmlessly in the nasal passage. Up to 80% of young children carry the bacterium in their nose. It is already known that if a colonized ...
