Philadelphia Bankruptcy Lawyer Adam Fogarty of Willig, Williams & Davidson Participates in Legal Pro Bono Bankruptcy Projects

Fogarty Serves as Supervising Attorney in Pro Bono Bankruptcy Cases through Rutgers Law - Camden & Consumer Bankruptcy Assistance Project

2011-04-13
PHILADELPHIA, PA, April 13, 2011 (Press-News.org) Philadelphia bankruptcy and consumer litigation lawyer Adam Fogarty of Willig, Williams & Davidson, is serving as a supervising attorney on two pro bono bankruptcy cases through the Rutgers School of Law - Camden Pro Bono Bankruptcy Project. As supervising attorney, Fogarty has overseen the efforts of a volunteer law student, assisting residents of Southern New Jersey who otherwise would not be represented in their bankruptcy proceedings before the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Camden, N.J. A graduate of Rutgers Law - Camden, Fogarty participated in the Bankruptcy Project as a student and is now continuing the longstanding tradition of Willig, Williams & Davidson lawyers giving back to their communities by returning to the program.

Most recently, Fogarty accepted his third pro bono case of the year from the Consumer Bankruptcy Assistance Project, an organization that provides direct, pro bono legal representation to the indigent seeking to obtain the protection of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

"As a law student, I was fortunate to gain valuable practical experience while assisting less fortunate individuals in the community through several pro bono law projects," said Fogarty. "It is gratifying to now be in a position to guide Rutgers law students as they embark on the same learning experience and begin to appreciate the importance of professional involvement in community service."

In overseeing the pro bono bankruptcy cases, Fogarty will guide the volunteer student through client interviews and the preparation of Chapter 7 bankruptcy petitions and any related court documents. Fogarty will then file the bankruptcy petitions with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Camden and Philadelphia and subsequently represent the pro bono clients through the remainder of their bankruptcy proceedings.

The Pro Bono Bankruptcy Project was established 12 years ago to assist Southern New Jersey residents who would otherwise attempt to represent themselves in bankruptcy proceedings, or forego filing for bankruptcy altogether due to a lack of pro bono legal representation. Since the Project's founding, hundreds of volunteer law students and attorneys have provided representation to nearly 1,500 clients.

The Consumer Bankruptcy Assistance Project was created by a group of consumer and business bankruptcy lawyers, members of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania Bankruptcy Conference, individuals from the Community Legal Services, Inc., and the Philadelphia Bar Association's Philadelphia Volunteers for the Indigent Program (VIP) to trains attorneys, law students and paralegal who provide direct representation to clients in Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Fogarty, who is resident in the Philadelphia office of Willig, Williams & Davidson, assists individuals and their families with their financial problems by focusing his practice on bankruptcy and consumer litigation. He is proud to help everyday people through his work as an attorney - an endeavor he began as a law student by participating in pro bono projects relating to domestic violence, small claims mediation, bankruptcy and income tax law. Fogarty is a member of the American, Camden County, Pennsylvania and Philadelphia bar associations and is admitted to practice throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
