SAN FRANCISCO, CA, September 15, 2010 (Press-News.org) The antibiotics fed to healthy food animals to fatten them up are causing antibiotic-resistance and making these important drugs ineffective as human medications? Really? Dr Margaret Mellon has written and spoken extensively on this subject, and her scientific findings are fascinating and frightening. Here's your chance to ask her in real time how she knows what she knows and what she proposes we do about it.
Bait and Switch TV's announces a live interview with Dr. Margaret Mellon from The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) on September 158h at 1:30 pm EST, 4:30 pm PST. Dr Mellon will talk about her work on the KEEP ANTIBIOTICS WORKING campaign, including discussion of superbugs and the effects of antibiotics in the US meat supply. Doctors depend on antibiotics to treat illnesses caused by bacteria, from pneumonia to meningitis and other life-threatening infections. The effectiveness of many antibiotics is declining after decades of overuse and misuse in agriculture. Dr. Mellon testified before the House Committee on Rules of the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act, H.R. 1549, in July of 2009, and is an outspoken advocate of food safety. She is the co-author of The Ecological Risks of Engineered Crops, with Jane Rissler. (http://www.ucsusa.org/assets/documents/food_and_agriculture/july-2009-pamta-testimony.pdf )
