RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA, May 25, 2011 (Press-News.org) In an attempt to cut down on the state's uninsured-motorist problem, the Tennessee House of Representatives gave its approval to a bill last week that would beef up the fines for driving without a policy in place in the state.

The legislation, which was passed on a 72-19 vote, gives just one more incentive for uninsured motorists to get quotes online for a low or no down payment auto insurance policy that will allow them to get financially protected and in compliance with the state's compulsory insurance law.

If HB 1834 gets approval from the senate and is signed into law by the governor, motorists caught on the road without at least a basic liability policy would be fined $250 maximum for a first offense and $500 maximum for subsequent offenses. The current fine is only $100 maximum.

And there's another hurdle that repeat offenders will have to overcome if the bill becomes law. HB 1834 would require law enforcement to impound vehicles when their drivers are unable to provide proof of coverage two or more times within a three-year period. The auto owner will be held responsible for towing and storage fees. And, if the person who picks up the vehicle is the same person who was caught driving uninsured, he or she will need to show proof that they have a policy in place in order to reclaim the vehicle.

Considering the fact that the average premium for a liability policy in the state was only $356 in 2008, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, simply purchasing coverage could end up costing less than driving without it.
