Recently, a Twin Cities man was convicted for his role in sexual assaults on intoxicated women in the area. According to a report in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Maksud Mahbub would visit local bars and look to assault women who had been drinking heavily.

At the trial, one victim testified that Mahbub offered her a ride home from a downtown Minneapolis bar. Mahbub brought the woman to his Shoreview townhouse where he allegedly raped her. The victim also testified that she had six shots of liquor and about five beers before the attack.

After the first woman came forward, police investigators suspected that there may be other potential victims. A Pioneer Press report notes that officials reviewed taxi cab records and found other women that were picked up from Mahbub's home. Interviews with those women turned up similar accounts. Mahbub was originally charged with six counts of third degree and fourth degree criminal sexual conduct in five separate criminal complaints.

In March, he was convicted of three counts of fourth degree criminal sexual contact and one count of third degree criminal sexual conduct. A Ramsey County judge recently sentenced Mahbub to 10 years in prison.

According to a Pioneer Press report, a custody hold has been placed on Mahbub by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Upon his release, he is expected to be deported to India, his native country.

Legislators Focusing on Indefinite Penalties for Some Sex Offenders

In March, a bill introduced by Rep. Tony Cornish which proposes indefinite sentences for the most violent sex offenders passed the House Public Safety and Crime Prevention Committee. According to a CBS report, this proposal comes on the heels of a critical report on the Minnesota Sex Offender Program. The cost for treating sex offenders through this program costs nearly $120,000 per person annually.

If the bill becomes law it would be a significant departure from the guideline--based sentences that Minnesota has used for decades.
