IRVINE, CA, June 09, 2011 (Press-News.org) Mark your calendar for the 2011 Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's , and unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions. The Alzheimer's Association of Orange County is continuing its 2011 season with its second Walk at The District at Tustin Legacy on Saturday, June 18.
Since 1989, the Alzheimer's Association has mobilized millions of Americans in the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk; now, they ask people to register for Walk to End Alzheimer's, the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. Alzheimer's disease is the nation's sixth-leading cause of death, and the fourth in Orange County.
The emcee for the event is Greer Wylder, founder of "Greer's OC" http://www.greersoc.com, who will provide tips on post-Walk shopping and dining at The District at Tustin Legacy. Since 1993, Greer has been writing about fashion, dining and trends in Orange County, as a popular columnist for the Los Angeles Time Community Newspapers (Daily Pilot, Coastline Pilot and HB Independent), and now, as a contributor to Riviera.
The Honorary Grand Marshalls for the Walk are the recipients of the Alzheimer's Association, Orange County Chapter's (AAOC) inaugural Young Scientists Awards. Students enrolled in high school, undergraduate or graduate programs in academic institutions in Orange County, and postdoctoral fellows in Orange County were invited to apply. The winners include:
Post-Doctoral Winner - Rahasson Ager, PhD

-Wins trip to International Conference on Alzheimer's disease (ICAD) 2011 in Paris, including plane fare and registration
-Will participate in a presentation on ICAD research with the AAOC CEO in August.
Graduate Student Winner - Kara Neely, PhD Candidate, UCI
Undergraduate Student Winners - Luigi Basilio, Cal State Fullerton and Sonia Kumar, Cal State Fullerton
High School Student Winners - Olivia Winokur, Dana Hills High School and Alex Morton, Newport Harbor High School

"She has tirelessly supported AAOC by helping us promote our fundraising efforts, and we're thrilled to be able to recognize her for her commitment to the O.C. nonprofit community. The purpose of the awards is to encourage our bright young scientific scholars to pursue a career in the field of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, and these students are our best and brightest — and the future in our quest to end this disease."
The event will offer lively entertainment, various food samplings, dozens of interactive exhibitors to visit, and an opportunity drawing to "Dine Out for a Year," with $600 in gift cards for those who donate $10 to register. There will also be Kids Zone, and Doggie Duggout with free doggie bandanas.
There will also be a "Make Your Own Sign" contest, where teams are encouraged to create their own signs and enter them in the contest at the Team Captain Check-In. Prizes will be awarded to the top three signs.
Walkers have the option of choosing either a two or four mile route. There is no registration fee, but all participants are encouraged to raise at least $100 in donations to receive a 2011 Walk t-shirt. Both individual walkers and teams of any size are encouraged to participate. Registration will open at 7:30 a.m., begin opening ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. and kick off the Walk at 10 a.m. Parking is available in all lots within The District at Tustin Legacy.
