Harlem Renaissance Economic Development Corp. Presents 11th Annual Harlem Renaissance Young Entrepreneurs Boot Camp
July 12 -16 and July 19 -23 2011, Harlem, NY. 11th annual Young Entrepreneurs Boot Camp will take place- a two week business training program for Harlem's youth utilizing the operation of an outdoor bakery cafe.
NEW YORK, NY, June 22, 2011
The goal of the Young Entrepreneurs Boot Camp is to cultivate the next generation of Harlem entrepreneurs by providing young people with the entrepreneurial skills necessary to successfully launch, manage and grow a business. In addition, the training program provides young people with life skills such as leadership, team building, and financial skills necessary for their future as responsible individuals. While participating in the operation of a retail business and selling baked goods and other products to the community, boot campers learn and immediately apply such business principles as personal selling, customer service, advertising and promotion, operations, costing, pricing and recordkeeping. The interactive exercises are supplemented by group discussion of the principles learned and applied during the operation of the bakery cafe. The curriculum is developed with the assistance of the National Foundation for the Teaching of Entrepreneurship (NFTE) and Making Cents which results in a dynamic and leading edge program that utilizes the best practices of interactive peer learning, team learning, and trainee-centered rather than teacher led learning. Field trips (Wall Street, Lloyd's Carrot Cake and other businesses, Farmers Market and Carrie McCracken TRUCE Community Garden) are an integral part of this simulating and dynamic experience. During a field trip to Manhattan's wholesale district, boot campers purchase bulk goods to sell at the Cafe while learning the significance of volume discounts, wholesale and retail costs, and mark up pricing.
