BERLIN, GERMANY, September 21, 2010 (Press-News.org) Lovers of contemporary jazz music have the perfect excuse to book a stay in Berlin hotels later this year.
Taking place between November 3rd and 7th, JazzFest Berlin is due to feature a host of special performances from leading jazz musicians at venues across the city.
One of the highlights of Berlin's musical calendar, this annual event focuses on the best European jazz talent, although acts from around the world will be taking part.
According to the organisers, artistic director Nils Landgren will present a "densely packed programme that is contemporary, but in a tradition-conscious way".
The five-day festival will showcase several varieties of jazz, with the Haus der Berliner Festspiele as its focal point.
Other JazzFest venues include Quasimodo, A-Trane and the Georg-Neumann-Saal of the Jazz-Institut Berlin.
German jazz enthusiasts will see many of the nation's leading musicians perform, including celebrated pianist Joachim Kuhn, veteran saxophonist Emil Mangelsdorff and rising piano star Pablo Held.
The Emil Mangelsdorff Quartett are due to play at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele on the opening night of the festival, with tickets priced at EUR10 (GBP8.30).
Mangelsdorff has been described by the organisers as a musician whose life and work encapsulates "the continuity of German jazz" like few others.
Now 85, the Frankfurt-born jazzman started out on the accordion before studying the clarinet at the famous Hoch Conservatory during the 1940s.
People attending his concert on November 3rd can look forward to enjoying the musician's "tremendously light, relaxed tone" and his interpretation of jazz as an "expression of joviality and vitality", the festival website states.
Tickets for events at JazzFest Berlin are individually priced, with a seat for the main stage at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele costing between EUR10 and EUR45.
Concerts at A-Trane are priced at EUR12, while Quasimodo charges EUR18 for admission.
For more information on this event, visit the JazzFest Berlin website or contact the organisers on +49 (0)30 254 89 100.

The End of an Era: Incandescent Light Bulb Factories Closing
2010-09-21
The 2007 energy conservation measure passed by Congress set standards to essentially ban incandescent lights by 2013, requiring households to make the switch to more energy efficient lights. According to recent news, the last major General Electric factory in the United States is closing this month, marking an end to a fixture that has been lighting homes since the 1870s. With incandescents out, fluorescent lamps and CFLs continue to grow in popularity, providing energy and greenhouse gas emission savings.

Incandescent Lights Result in More Mercury Pollution Than Fluorescents
2010-09-21
In addition to carefully recycling products that contain mercury, we can reduce mercury pollution by reducing our energy consumption. Because mercury is a byproduct of burning coal, coal-fired power plants are one of the largest sources of mercury pollution. Because incandescent bulbs use several times more electricity over their lifetimes, they require far more power generation and, ultimately, result in more mercury emission than fluorescents. With the coming "maximal achievable technology" clean air standards, it is fully expected that mercury emissions will have to ...
Understand How Auto Insurance Rates Are Determined
2010-09-21
Auto insurance companies go to great lengths in order to assess the levels of risk posed by motorists. The formulas developed by insurers usually end up being so complex and vary so greatly among companies that it might be hard for a consumer to understand what factors could have led to the determination of his or her rates. But, by looking at the provisions of a California state law that has been in place since 1988, consumers can get a better idea of what insurers are looking at when calculating their premiums.
Voters in the end of the 1980s passed proposition 103 ...
