North Carolina Boosted DWI and BWI Enforcement at End of Summer

The end of summer is a busy time for North Carolina's highway and boating authorities. In the past, these summer months have brought an increasing number of DWI and BWI arrests and other minor citations.

As fall approaches people try to enjoy a final fun weekend before the colder, drearier months arrive. These weekends often involve mixing alcohol while boating, as well as drinking watching weekend football games. This increased alcohol consumption also increases the likelihood of drunk driving

However, this year law enforcement feels more prepared. In order to deter motorists from drinking and driving, North Carolina authorities increased enforcement and sobriety checkpoints during these high risk months.

Enforcement Results

The North Carolina Highway Patrol, along with other authorities, released the staggering number of DWI charges filed over Labor Day weekend. In sum, over 8,000 citations were issued for various violations, over 400 of which were for driving while intoxicated.

This resulted from North Carolina law enforcement initiating their "On the Road, On the Water, Don't Drink and Drive" campaign. Authorities feel this campaign was successful and prevented many people from drinking and driving, especially with how well it was advertised.

Authorities believe they were successful in removing these potentially dangerous drivers from North Carolina's roads and waterways. This was accomplished by stacking patrols on North Carolina's most popular waterways and major interstates, something which may continue as fall approaches.

Consequences of DWI or BWI Convictions

Occasionally even the most upstanding citizen gets behind a wheel after having too much to drink. This is an unfortunate reality of our society. However, anyone facing DWI charges must ensure their rights were not violated and the issuing officer followed proper protocol.

If someone is charged with DWI or other traffic violations, it is important to consult an experienced DWI attorney immediately to discuss his or her rights, options and benefits of an attorney advocate.
