3 Reasons why people don't Recycle

Canada's premier DIY-ista talks about people's reluctance to recycle, and how you can make it more exciting

2010-09-23
EDMONTON, AB, CANADA, September 23, 2010 (Press-News.org) No thinking person can see the footage of our massive city dumps & not say to themselves: we can do better.

No doubt, any person who works for a city, or who works at a dump, is astonished every day at what people throw out. And cities go out of their way to make sure recycling is easy. Yet still tonnes of perfectly good material are thrown out every day.

Recycling and Upcycling expert Linda Bodo had this to say in a recent interview:

"It is SO easy to minimise our trash, yet so few do. Why? Well, a bunch of reasons. Number One- Except during garbage strikes, it's so easy not to care what happens to our waste- we live in a throwaway society. Number Two- cities make little to nothing from their recycling programs, so they don't push hard enough. And Number Three- costs are so little for manufacturers that they have very little incentive to recycle. Glass is so cheap that you can't re-sell it. Recycling takes time & money. And the worst aspect is- we're spoiled. Prices are so low that it's easy to buy new, instead of doing things on your own. Who is going to make their own soap when your local drugstore will sell you 5 bars for $1.49 + tax?"

But the success of Bodo's latest book The Art of Upcycling shows that growing numbers of the public are starting to care, & make a difference.

"People are starting to realise how easy green can be. We started to see this during the recession; people found out, fast, that you can save big money by recycling, upcycling, or doing things on your own. Visits to my website tripled, and then quadrupled. Really, green is the easy way. It just makes sense. Our ancestors recycled. Why can't we?

And it doesn't have to be some pie-in-the-sky project. Whole families can get involved--kids especially like to make sure nothing makes it into the trash that shouldn't. Just about everything we buy can be recycled."

Three Buyers Fighting for One Spanish Property? Not Unusual in Murcia's Camposol

2010-09-23
Whilst the Spanish property market is in many ways a shadow of its early 2000s self, there are certain regions that are vastly outperforming others. Take the month of June in Murcia for example. According to the National Institute of Statistics 1,308 homes changed hands that month in Murcia compared with a national average of just 99. And why is this? Price. At Camposol in Mazarron you can pick up a two bedroom fully-furnished terraced home for 50,000 euros (41,000 pounds) - where else in Southern Spain can you do that? Mazarron's Camposol is quite unique in Spain right ...
