Local Nonprofit Spreads Holiday Cheer to At-Risk Teenage Girls

My Girlfriends House, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, treats area at-risk young ladies to a holiday brunch.

GLEN BURNIE, MD, December 23, 2011 (Press-News.org) As a way of spreading holiday cheer and giving back to at- risk young ladies in their community, My Girlfriend's House, a nonprofit organization that runs a mentoring program for middle and high school girls in the Washington metropolitan region, sponsored the meals of 50 teenage girls living in poverty, homeless shelters, and foster homes during their annual Girlfriends and Divas Holiday Brunch on December 18th.

The brunch, which took place at Phillips Seafood Restaurant in DC, was a holiday celebration for the participants of My Girlfriend's House's ongoing Girl Talk Mentoring program. Young ladies, from the ages of 12-18, attended the brunch free of charge and along with a full buffet, the young ladies were treated to a complete program that featured community awareness, entertainment, raffles, best dressed competitions, surprise giveaways, entertaining games, a chance to network with prominent business women, and received My Girlfriend's House's signature Purse Strings, an ongoing initiative that provides purses stuffed with beauty and personal care items.

Spearheaded by Veronica Eyenga, the Executive Director of My Girlfriend's House, the annual brunch recognized two other community organizations which My Girlfriend's House supports: one of which was Sarah's House, a homeless shelter for single parents and their children.

"There are so many organizations that are doing good work for the young ladies in our community and this is just a small way for us to recognize their good works, while giving them the additional support they need to empower more of our young ladies," Eyenga stated.
In addition to the on-going mentoring program, young ladies supported by My Girlfriend's House are also treated to the organization's "d-Store", an online donation center that offers free household, personal care, and clothing items.

"I'm so excited about the d-store! I can't believe that you guys are offering all of this stuff for free," exclaimed one of the young ladies who reside at Sarah's House about the free online shopping. "I have some shoes that I no longer wear and I would be happy to donate them to you to put on the site for someone else who may need them."

Ms. Eyenga was overwhelmed by the support and successful execution of the day's event. "I am so happy that we were able to make these girls' Christmas so special. With our supportive members and generous community, we were able to provide these girls with the gift that keeps giving; new friends, a new network of women that support and care about them, and some essential products that will make things for them a little easier. I couldn't ask for more."
