Decrease in Work-Related Fatalities Seen in Texas in 2010

The Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Workers' Compensation reported 456 work-related fatalities in Texas in 2010, a 5 percent decrease from 482 in 2009. Despite the decrease in fatalities, though, the number of fatal personal injuries occurring at work is still too high.

The category of work with the most work-related fatalities is now transportation, which experienced a 20 percent increase from 2009 and continues to be the type of work with the highest number of workplace fatalities. The deaths were scattered amongst aircraft incidents, highway incidents and pedestrians beings struck by vehicles and other mobile equipment. In over half of the reported fatalities, a truck was involved.

Fortunately, workplace homicides decreased and workplace suicides did not increase.

No matter where you work, workplace injuries can occur. To help prevent workplace injuries, follow these tips:
-Stay up-to-date on workplace safety: For example, attend seminars on how to lift or move furniture properly to prevent back injuries. Another example is to attend clinics on updated policies and machinery procedures to ensure you are current in your certifications and knowledge.
-Know OSHA rules: The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has guidelines that every employer must follow. These rules are in place to protect both the employee and the employer. When everyone is familiar with these guidelines, the work environment is safer.
-Keep a first-aid kit handy and full: Make sure you know where to find proper first-aid materials and encourage their use. Document every accident and injury so problems can be addressed.
-Dress for safety: Wear appropriate clothing and footgear to avoid work-related injuries. Keeping long hair tied back and dressing accordingly for your profession can help you avoid being injured at work.

If you or someone you love has been injured or killed in a work-related incident, contact a personal injury attorney with experience in workplace injury cases to discuss any legal claims you may have.
