NOVI, MI, May 28, 2012
As part of his commitment to staying current in modern advances and technology associated with sleep apnea effects and treatments, Dr. Joe Serra has attended the new obstructive sleep apnea course offered by LVI Global entitled, LVI Sleep - The Physiologic Approach to Treating OSA. The course is designed to assist dentists, such as Dr. Serra, in learning about the relationships between health, sleep breathing disorders and neuromuscular dentistry. The course teaches dentists to better identify, co-manage and refer patients who are suffering from obstructive sleep apnea and snoring. This LVI course includes topics on obstructive sleep apnea that have boosted Dr. Serra's knowledge of Dental Sleep Medicine and will now allow him to be better recognized by medical sleep specialists. This knowledge includes integrating awareness of OSA into normal dental routines; the ability to better identify patients who may suffer from OSA and snoring; and the ability to treat OSA and temporomandibular disorder at the same time. These key concepts will better assist Dr. Serra in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea is a dangerous sleeping disorder that causes patients to stop breathing while they sleep, resulting in day-to-day symptoms such as fatigue, daytime drowsiness, morning headaches, and a lack of energy. Those who are suffering from obstructive sleep apnea are unfortunately at an increased risk of developing health problems ranging from heart attacks to depression; which is why seeking the right treatment option from a sleep dentist is important.
Treatments and connections between sleep apnea and other health problems are constantly being investigated and changed. In a recent study in Spain, findings showed that sleep apneics are at a 65 percent greater risk for developing any kind of cancer than those who are not suffering from sleep apnea. Other studies have shown that sleep apnea is linked to early onset diabetes, and can be a major contributor to depression and even obesity in both children and adults.
Because sleep apnea research continues to reveal new health risks and more valid treatment options, Dr. Serra makes continuing education in sleep apnea treatment a top priority.
