David Urovsky Observes Benefits of New Adults-Only Toy Facility in Japan

Toique, a new bar and toy arena for Japanese citizens, allows interested adults a chance to play with innovative toys and puzzles. David Urovsky, the space offers unique benefits for those interested in the industry.

2012-06-25
NEW YORK, NY, June 25, 2012 (Press-News.org) Toys are commonly marketed to children and teenagers as unique playthings that are meant to cause a craze. In fact, many developers, such as toy-maker, David Urovsky notes that toys have the unique ability to increase sales through a "have and have-not" factor. Urovsky explains, "Children are often influenced by their peers, and when they see a cool toy they don't have they push their parents to purchase it." However, children are being excluded from the picture altogether at one unique space in Japan, called Toique. In a recent article from Kotaku.com, the space is described as a one-of-a-kind place for people aged fifteen and up, where they can enjoy a chance to play with some innovative toys and games without the presence of children.

David Urovsky, who has made children's toys for nearly ten years, describes these products as one of the last symbols of innocence in today's culture. Using that logic, he initially found Toique to be "disheartening to the spirit invoked by children's playthings." However, the toymaker took another look at the qualities described in the article and found that the business offers benefits rarely found at any other museum, arcade or play place.

Kotaku.com describes the atmosphere of Toique as a mash-up of "toys" and "unique" - where the business got its name. The space is a bar and a cafe, but its solicitation of alcoholic beverages is not the reason children are not allowed. Toique owner, Ikuto Shimizu, tells Kotaku that there are many places for children to play in Tokyo, but not very many places for people to appreciate the beauty of analog toys and games. Shimizu continues to explain the space's purpose as a place where adults can enjoy child-like fun without having to worry about the distractions children are known to cause.

The bar also offers its own set of rules: visitors are allowed to play with any toy they want, but only for an hour. David Urovsky comments on this innovative tactic, "Toique allows adults to reconnect with their own child-like spirit and interact with the things that children care about most."

Urovsky continues by applauding the business for its potential to raise an interest in the toy-making profession. He concludes by stating, "Those who visit Toique may gain insight into the unique careers offered by the toys and games industry. The experience offers visitors a chance to really understand the innovation behind toy-making which might inspire some to create their own products for children consumers."

Sparing an innocent man's life or subjecting yourself to extreme public scrutiny. If the choice was in your hands, what would you do? Original play, Ecce, begs this very question.
