New Mobile App Helps Drunk-Driving Suspects Know Legal Rights

A new cell-phone app helps those accused of drunk driving learn about their legal rights.

July 01, 2012

A new mobile app is stirring up a lot of controversy. The app is called "DUI STOP" and gives a user information on drunk-driving laws as well as a free consultation from a local drunk-driving defense lawyer who participates in the program. The consultation is available during any hour of the day or night.

An "app" is basically a focused computer program to use on a smartphone. This app was created by an Ohio attorney who claims that it is the first of its kind in the nation. It became available in a few counties in Ohio in June and the next target market is Kentucky.

A Typical DUI Arrest Makes It Hard to Find an Attorney

Usually, suspected intoxicated drivers have a hard time finding and consulting with attorneys when they are stopped. Arrests often occur during the early hours of the morning and if suspects want to talk to lawyers they are handed phone books by the police. The new app will greatly benefit those accused of drunk driving because they will be able to immediately find out the penalties for driving under the influence, or DUI, in their jurisdiction and even get crucial legal advice.

It is important that people accused of drunk driving understand their legal rights and the potential ramifications. DUI convictions carry heavy penalties and follow those convicted forever. The app also helps people deal with the consequences of DUI convictions. For example, it can help find drug and alcohol treatment programs that are court approved as well as identify high-risk insurance policies available for purchase.

Availability of the App

The app is free and is available for iPhones and iPads, and there are plans for it to be available on Android devices soon. Right now, it is only available in Ohio, but its inventor hopes to extend its geographical reach.

The app's creator hopes that aside from giving much needed information to those accused of drunk driving, the app will discourage people from drunk driving. However, those accused of driving while intoxicated have important legal rights that need to be protected. Anyone accused of drunk driving should always contact an attorney with experience in DUI to pursue a vigorous criminal defense.
