The Ethicon unit of Johnson & Johnson recently told a federal judge that the company has plans to discontinue the sale of some of its vaginal mesh products after a number of lawsuits were filed. The brand names to be removed from the market are Prolift, Prolift+ M, TVT Secur and Prosima.

Dangers of Vaginal Mesh Products

Vaginal mesh products, which are used to treat urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse, have been under scrutiny in recent years. Hundreds of women have sued Johnson & Johnson because of injuries they claim they have suffered from using these devices. The products have been linked to pain, infections, organ damage, internal injuries and other complications.

Other companies, including C.R. Bard Inc. and Endo Health Solutions Inc., have also been sued for injuries allegedly caused by their vaginal mesh products. In response to customer complaints, the FDA reclassified the devices as high risk and noted that further testing is needed on the products.

Johnson & Johnson's Response to Lawsuits

Johnson & Johnson requested permission from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to stop marketing these devices. Additionally, it asked to be given four months to stop selling the products so that its customers would have ample time to find alternative products since its' would no longer be available for sale.

Johnson & Johnson has also asked the FDA to allow it to continue selling another vaginal mesh product, sold under the brand name Gyencare Gynemesh, but to change the labeling so that the use of the product is restricted.
