Arizona Trauma Surgeons Honored by U.S. News & World Report

Phoenix area orthopedic surgeons Dr. Gil Ortega and Dr. Anthony Rhorer have been named to U.S. News & World Report's list of top doctors. This prestigious list includes only doctors who have been nominated for the honor by their peers.

2012-07-21
SCOTTSDALE, AZ, July 21, 2012 (Press-News.org) Dr. Gil Ortega and Dr. Anthony Rhorer of Sonora Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeons in Scottsdale have joined an elite group of Phoenix area orthopedic surgeons who have been named to U.S. News & World Report's list of top doctors.

The national news outlet publishes the list online, working in conjunction with Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., a New York City-based company that has been identifying the nation's top doctors for nearly 20 years. Castle Connolly bases its selections on nominations submitted by other doctors, which are then reviewed by a physician-led research team.

"This is a great honor," Dr. Ortega says. "It feels good to be selected by your peers and to know that such respected doctors hold you in equally high regard."

Dr. Ortega's interest in orthopedic surgery began when he became an orthopedic patient following a football injury to his knee. He credits the outstanding care he received from his surgeon with both his ability to return to sports and his desire to become an orthopedic surgeon.

"I think my experience as a patient made me a better doctor," says the graduate of Yale Medical School who refined his training through residencies and fellowships both here and abroad before coming to Arizona to practice as an orthopedic surgeon in Scottsdale. "It made me extremely aware of the need for good communication with the patient and the importance of developing an understanding of that person as an individual."

Dr. Rhorer is an Arizona native who earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine, followed by fellowships both here and in Russia. He then returned to Arizona and founded his Phoenix area orthopedic surgery practice, Sonoran Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeons.

"It was important to me to come back to my home state, where I could provide patients from the Phoenix area with world class care," he says.

Since that time, the practice has grown to include five fellowship-trained trauma surgeons.

Dr. Rhorer also serves as medical director of orthopedic trauma for Scottsdale Healthcare, where he and his team were instrumental in achieving the medical center's status as an American College of Surgeons Level I trauma center.

Sonoran Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeons is a practice dedicated solely to the treatment of complex fractures. Its surgeons have all completed orthopedic residencies and are fellowship-trained in orthopedic trauma, a subspecialty that requires expertise and dedication to manage complex injuries of the hips, pelvis and upper and lower extremities. To provide only the best for patients in the Phoenix area, we stay on the leading edge of new research and techniques by participating in professional conferences and courses related to orthopedic trauma, as well as publishing scientific and educational literature for the medical community.
