Joe Yurkin Supports Efforts to Assist Women in Abusive Situations

Donna Ferrato, famed photographer, shed light on domestic abuse in the late eighties, continues her fight to expose these wrongs and offer support to battered women. Joe Yurkin, long-time supporter of Elizabeth Ministries, supports these movements.

NEW YORK, NY, July 23, 2012

In 1982, Donna Ferrato took on a photography assignment for Playboy Japan to initially capture the lives of a New Jersey-based polyamorous couple. The images she took exposed the severity and reality of domestic abuse and caused an upset around the world. This one assignment began a long career for Ferrato in the assistance of abused women. Time recently released an article checking-in with the activist and gathered her thoughts on the current state of domestic abuse thirty years later. Joe Yurkin is proud supporter of organizations that act against this crime, including the notable Elizabeth Ministries.

Elizabeth Ministries is a nonprofit organization that aims to promote well-being and health among families. The group has a particular focus on assisting women who encounter domestic issues, including that of spousal abuse. Although Joe Yurkin is a skilled boxing trainer and athletic manager, he is strongly against any non-controlled acts of violence. He currently owns The Sports Complex Boxing Club of Florida, an organization that aims to help children channel their daily challenges into positive athletic development. "My organization has helped many young individuals who come from troubled or broken homes, and I see everyday how real these problems are," says Yurkin who has participated with several volunteer and charity organizations to minimize such issues.

Ferrato has also remained committed to the fight against domestic abuse ever since her unique exposure to its existence. She has authored material on the subject and is in the process of developing a series called I Am Unbeatable; it aims to help women overcome such battles. She comments on her motivation, "I was so upset that many young women were putting up with abuse and romanticizing it. I wanted to show how much better life became when the woman left the abuser."

Both Joe Yurkin and Donna Ferrato have expressed concerns on the importance of strong role models, even for women. Ferrato points to Rihanna's return to Chris Brown, who abused her a few years prior, "It was especially upsetting given how many young fans follow Rihanna's every move." Yurkin recently addressed the potential of a celebrity boxing match between Chris Brown and Drake, an event that would hold a close connection to the romantic entanglements these stars have had with Rihanna. While he is a supporter of boxing, he hopes that such an event would not make light of the very serious situation that is domestic violence.

Joe Yurkin believes that it takes bold and brave women to escape their abusers, and that America needs to be more aware of the existence of such problems. However, he agrees with Ferrato, "It is very important for women in these situations to see how great life is after leaving the abuser. Organizations like Elizabeth Ministries are great because they help individuals realize the potential for growth."
