Freedom School Assemblies with Oba William King

This event begins with Harambee; a 30 minute affirmation celebration that prepares students for the day's work ahead. And what a day it will be.

Beginning at 10am, in a series of assemblies for grades K thru 8, Oba William King will enchant and enlighten Freedom School students and the community audience with his unique and powerful storytelling style, complete with dramatic, interactive presentations.

In addition to Oba's Multi-Cultural tales and songs that celebrate a diversified America,
the scheduled assemblies will also feature words of wisdom for the girls from the empowering poem "Girls Hold Up This World," by author, actress and mother, Jada Pinkett Smith.
Oba will direct his focus on the boys with a special presentation titled, "Pull 'em Up."

Thursday, August 2, 2012 The Prayer Center,
5239 Atlantic Ave, Long Beach, CA, 90805
Freedom School PEP (Parent Empowerment Program) Rally

This event begins at 6pm. The "Parent Empowerment Program" is designed to provide community connections, information and encouragement for parents seeking to be more involved with their children's daily learning process. Local vendors will host information stations with resources for basic services that align with Freedom School's goal to increase parent's knowledge of children's developmental needs, as well as their own civic responsibility.

While the parents are involved in this informational program, their children will be in a Stories, Songs, and Drama workshop, led by Oba, assisted by local musicians and Freedom School volunteers. The workshop will reinforce Tuesday's themes of Oba's Multicultural tales and the song "I Love My People", and will culminate in a half hour performance that students will present to their parents and community at 7pm that evening.
