Heathrow Opens its Own Olympic Park to Wave Off World's Athletes in Style

Heathrow is waving off athletes in style on one of the most challenging and high-profile days in its history following the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

MIDDLESEX, ENGLAND, August 16, 2012 (Press-News.org) Heathrow opens its own Olympic park to wave off world's athletes in style

- Specially constructed Games Terminal starts three days of operations

- Terminal dressed as a park to give a spectacular London-style send off

- More than 5,000 bags collected at Olympic Village yesterday and processed overnight

- 6,000 athletes expected through Games Terminal today

Heathrow is waving off athletes in style on one of the most challenging and high-profile days in its history following the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The first athletes have started to arrive at a specially constructed Games Terminal which has been dressed like a London park to give a memorable farewell. The terminal includes plants, park benches, replica gas lights, trees and model stags. Its walls display London's skyline and the park is filled with iconic London designs such as the red telephone box and Routemaster bus. Some Heathrow staff are dressed like park wardens for the day and a bearskin guard is stationed at ticket presentation. Athletes will be invited to record their favourite memory of the London Games and hang it on a tree which will be displayed at Heathrow after the Games. Athletes' comments will be collated into books that will be presented to the 1,300 Heathrow volunteers who have helped make arrivals and departures such a success.

The Games Terminal is part of a completely new departures process that has been put in place for Olympic athletes. Departing athletes are expected to leave with more than three bags per person, including outsize sporting equipment. To make departures easier and to cope with the large number of bags, athletes used check-in and bag-drop facilities at the Olympic Village yesterday. 5,040 bags were successfully collected at the Olympic Village and processed through Heathrow's baggage system overnight to relieve the pressure on the airport today.

Around 6,000 athletes are expected to travel from the Olympic Village to the Games Terminal today, its busiest day of its operation. The temporary terminal is part of Heathrow's GBP20 million investment in handling London 2012 passengers. Equivalent in size to three Olympic swimming pools, the terminal has 31 check-in desks and seven security lanes to help deal with the high number of departures. After three days of operation the terminal will be decommissioned and the site returned to its original use as a staff car park.

No aircraft depart from the Games Terminal. Instead, athletes will take an airside coach to their final departure point where they'll be able to mingle with regular passengers as they wait for their flight. Athletes will be clapped into each terminal by a 'guard of honour' made up of Heathrow volunteers as we wish them luck in their future sporting endeavours.

Heathrow has been proud to play its part in a successful London Olympics, with thousands of athletes, spectators and Olympic officials receiving the warmest of welcomes as they arrived in London. An army of pink-suited volunteers greeted them with smiles whilst the increased immigration staffing put in place by Border Force saw minimal queues as people entered the UK. As a result passengers rated their arrival at Heathrow during July as the best ever, with the airport's monthly customer satisfaction survey achieving it highest score since records began in 1990.

Regular passengers should check-in through their normal terminal three-hours before scheduled departure for long-haul flights and two-hours before scheduled departure time for European flights. They can expect a normal journey and should not have to wait any longer than usual, but they might be lucky enough to spot some of the heroes of the 2012 Games in their departure lounge.

Colin Matthews, Chief Executive of BAA, said:

"We want to continue the feel-good factor of the Games at the airport on our busiest day for departing athletes. I hope our Games Terminal park will bring a smile to passengers' faces and contribute to final happy memories of London."

"Olympic Village check-in went according to plan yesterday with thousands of bags being processed at Heathrow overnight. Today's departures present a fresh challenge with new facilities like the Games Terminal being used for the first time. We have been preparing for seven years to deliver a farewell of which Great Britain can be proud."

Apartment therapy: How does 'good taste' become second nature for consumers?

2012-08-15
Design blogs such as Apartment Therapy or lifestyle brands such as Martha Stewart help consumers exercise taste in their everyday life as they learn how to generate meaning through objects, according to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research. "Participating in a taste regime allows consumers to assemble coherent sets of objects, associate meanings with those objects, and then create routines that serve to maintain the physical order of objects and their associated meanings," write authors Zeynep Arsel (Concordia University) and Jonathan Bean (Parsons The New ...

Giving to charity: Why do we donate more money to individuals when they are members of a group?

2012-08-15
When charity recipients seem to belong to a cohesive group, donors will make stronger judgments about the victims, which leads to greater concern and increased donations if these judgments are positive, according to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research. "One of the most puzzling aspects of charitable giving is the relative meagerness of donations to large numbers of 'statistical' victims in contrast to the generosity shown to a single identified victim," write authors Robert W. Smith (University of Michigan), David Faro (London Business School), and Katherine ...

Ownership increases the value of products: How does gender matter?

2012-08-15
The price a consumer will pay for a product is often significantly less than the price they will accept to sell it. According to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research, this occurs because ownership of a product enhances its value by creating an association between the product and consumer identity. "Our studies support the idea that ownership enhances the attractiveness of a product because ownership creates an association between the item and the self," write authors Sara Loughran Dommer (Georgia Institute of Technology) and Vanitha Swaminathan (University ...

Don't burn out: Enjoy your favorite products more by consuming them less frequently

2012-08-15
Consumers enjoy products more in the long run if they don't overuse them when first purchased, according to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research. "Consumers are naturally prone to consume products they enjoy too rapidly for their own good, growing tired of them more quickly than they would if they slowed down," write authors Jeff Galak (Carnegie Mellon University), Justin Kruger (New York University), and George Loewenstein (Carnegie Mellon University). We often face decisions about how rapidly to consume products we enjoy: how quickly to eat a favorite dessert; ...
