Dennis Bucko: Plastic Surgeon Highlights Surprising Benefits of Liposuction

Stem cells harvested through liposuction have been used to grow blood vessels. Dennis Bucko, plastic surgeon, believes this is the first in many steps toward the routine growth of blood vessels.

NEW YORK, NY, August 16, 2012

Science Daily reports that blood vessels have been grown from stem cells harvested through liposuction. Dennis Bucko, plastic surgeon, believes this to be the first step toward routine growth of such vessels which, ultimately, will improve the success of heart surgeries.

According to the article, researchers extracted stem cells from the fat cells that were collected during liposuction. These stem cells were then used to grow small-diameter blood vessels. These blood-vessels are intended for use during heart bypass surgeries and other cardiovascular surgical procedures. The results of this study, which has successfully grown the blood vessels, were presented at the American Heart Association's Basic Cardiovascular Sciences 2012 Scientific Sessions.

The article details the methods of the study: "In this study, adult stem cells derived from fat are turned into smooth muscle cells in the laboratory, and then 'seeded' into a very thin collagen membrane. As the stem cells multiplied, the researchers rolled them into tubes matching the diameter of small blood vessels. In three to four weeks, they grew into usable blood vessels."

These vessels are expected to have a tremendous impact on the medical field once they have undergone proper trials and are ready for transplant into human patients. According to Science Daily, there are millions of patients who have cardiovascular disease and need small-diameter vessels. These vessels are used as grafts to re-route the flow of blood. Currently, surgeons may use blood vessels from other parts of the body or synthetic vessels, both of which present a wide range of potential complications, including clotting, rejection, and failure.

Dr. Bucko believes that this new breakthrough is a wonderful success for the medical industry. "The researchers who have achieved this groundbreaking accomplishment have pushed the industry into a new arena," comments Dr. Bucko. "By growing these blood vessels, the medical industry will, eventually, be able to provide vessels as they are needed. There are so many patients who need surgeries but either do not have sufficient blood vessels or are not candidates for synthetic vessels. Ultimately, this breakthrough will, once it has been fully developed, save millions of lives."

Dr. Bucko looks forward to future success in this endeavor and supports the researchers in their efforts to continue to finely-tune the blood vessel growth process. He hopes that, in the near future, the vessels will be widely available.
