Carolina Ballet Unveils 2012-2013 Season

Professional Ballet Company Announces Performances For Its 15th Season, Including The Nutcracker, The Rite of Spring, And Giselle

RALEIGH, NC, August 19, 2012 (Press-News.org) Robert Weiss, artistic director and CEO of Carolina Ballet (http://www.carolinaballet.com), has announced the lineup for the company's upcoming 2012-2013 season, including their holiday production of The Nutcracker and a staging of the classic Giselle. Scheduled productions include:

Evening Of Robert Weiss
Featuring Symposium And Intimate Voices (Sept. 13-30, A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater)
To open its 15th anniversary season, Carolina Ballet presents an evening of ballet by Artistic Director Robert Weiss, highlighting several of his performances created especially for the company. The centerpiece is Symposium, based on Plato's dialogue of the same name and choreographed in 2004 to Leonard Bernstein's "Serenade." It was hailed by The News & Observer as "Lovely, moving and perfectly matched to the music." The program will also feature the world premiere of a Weiss original, Intimate Voices.

A Balanchine Celebration
Featuring Who Cares? And Other Favorites (Oct. 11-28, A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater)
Not only was George Balanchine the founding artistic director and choreographer of New York City Ballet, he was also an established choreographer on Broadway and in Hollywood. Holding a longstanding personal relationship with composer George Gershwin, Balanchine created Who Cares? as an homage to Gershwin's impressive work.

The Nutcracker (Nov. 23-Dec. 23, Raleigh Memorial Auditorium; Dec. 1-2, UNC Memorial Hall in Chapel Hill; Dec. 29-30, Durham Performing Arts Center)
The magic of Carolina Ballet's The Nutcracker, which premiered to many sold-out performances in 2011, will return to the stage for the 2012 lineup. This year's production also features music by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky and choreography by Weiss, with grand-scale illusions created especially for Carolina Ballet that make the performance a truly magical family experience.

Evening Of Lynne Taylor-Corbett
Featuring Mercury, Code Of Silence And Singer Lauren Kennedy In December Songs (Feb. 7-24, A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater)
Evening Of Lynne Taylor-Corbett showcases the incredible diversity of human emotion, the unique power of compassion and the anguish and torment associated with lost love. December Songs, featuring Broadway star and Raleigh native Lauren Kennedy singing composer Maury Yeston's beautiful yet sad song cycle, made its musical premiere at the 100th anniversary of Carnegie Hall in 2008. For the first time, Carolina Ballet will present Mercury, set to the music of Joseph Haydn, which made its original debut at New York City Ballet.

The Rite Of Spring (March 7-24, A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater)
Well-known Russian composer Igor Stravinsky created The Rite of Spring (Le Sacre du Printemps) for Diaghilev's Ballet Russe in 1913, which was originally choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky. Carolina Ballet celebrates the piece's 100th anniversary with this unique version, which was originally choreographed for Oregon Ballet Theatre in 2009 by Christopher Stowell. Critics have hailed it as "A sleek, sophisticated, thoroughly neo-classic version" of this world-famous ballet.

Fancy Free & Carolina Jamboree (April 18-21, Raleigh Memorial Auditorium; April 26, Durham Performing Arts Center)
Fancy Free, the first ballet choreographed by Jerome Robbins, took New York City by storm, propelled Robbins to a household name and led to a life of work on Broadway, in the movies and in ballet. With music by Leonard Bernstein, Fancy Free was so popular that it became the basis for the movie On The Town with Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly. The second half of the show, Carolina Jamboree, will feature choreography by Lynne Taylor-Corbett and music by The Red Clay Ramblers, a Chapel Hill, N.C.-based band. This performance is a special combination of bluegrass and classical ballet that is sure to have guests dancing in the aisles.

Giselle (May 16-19, Raleigh Memorial Auditorium; May 23, Durham Performing Arts Center)
Giselle, the touchstone of ballet for the Romantic era, which made its debut in Paris in 1841, is still being performed by every major ballet company in the world. Carolina Ballet is proud to add Giselle to its repertoire, with amazing sets and costumes imported from Florence, Italy. It features music by Adolphe Adam and choreography by Jules Perrot and Jean Coralli, with modifications by Weiss, who considers it the ultimate romantic ballet.

Single ticket sales for Raleigh productions will be available on Monday, Aug. 20, with tickets for The Nutcracker available for sale on Monday, Sept. 17.
