PORTLAND, ME, August 20, 2012 (Press-News.org) The WorkBoat Size of Fleet Report, a first-ever in-depth review of the total number and composition of active, in-service, workboats and barges that operate on the North American coastal and inland waterways, has been published by WorkBoat magazine and is now available for purchase.
"The report provides an excellent snapshot of the range of workboat categories covered by WorkBoat and offers a strong overview, including certain vessel specifications, of today's working brownwater-workboat fleet," said David Krapf, WorkBoat's editor in chief. "Until now, no such comprehensive resource has existed."
The new report, which includes vessel fleet data through July 2012, is an excellent reference source and tool. "Based on the number of requests we have received from industry officials, analysts and others seeking such information over the past decade, we believe this is a resource that the industry demands and wants," Krapf said.
For companies and others in the workboat industry, this information can help:
- Gain intimate knowledge of industry market sectors
- Assess future manufacturing needs and plans
- Assess vessel fleet sizes to better evaluate current operations and business models
- Target and guide current business efforts and plan for possible future expansion programs
The WorkBoat Size of Fleet Report is available for download and purchase. The price is $1,695 for WorkBoat.com members. The regular price is $1.995.

The WorkBoat Industry Size of Fleet Report
To create the new report, the WorkBoat research team had multiple discussions over the past year with officials from the U.S. Coast Guard, the Corps of Engineers and other federal agencies, industry associations and scores of cities, counties and states, as well as commercial vessel owners and operators. The result is a comprehensive report that includes traditional workboat categories such as tugs, towboats and pushboats, offshore service vessels, patrol boats and barges.
Just as WorkBoat's Annual Construction Survey does not include every U.S. workboat construction yard and every delivered or contracted vessel in the U.S., the WorkBoat Size of Fleet Report does not claim to provide the definitive total number of workboats in the U.S. "After over a year of research, we have come up with a U.S. workboat report that is by no means 100 percent inclusive, but it is one that no one else can match," Krapf said. "We have gathered and verified thousands of pieces of data and distilled the results down to a single report that can be used as an asset and reference tool for the industry."
Pulled from hundreds of data sources, the report includes detailed information on the following vessel categories: Barges, Dredges, Fireboats, Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODUs), Naval Vessels, NOAA Vessels, Oceanographic Research Vessels, Offshore Supply Vessels (OSVs), Oil Spill Response Vessels (OSRVs), Passenger Vessels, Pilot Vessels, Towboats/Pushboats, School/Academy Training Vessels, State-Owned Police, Patrol & Fishery Patrol Vessels, Tankships, Tugs, U.S. Coast Guard Boats, and U.S. Coast Guard Cutters.
The report focuses on four classifications (and capacity where applicable) within each category:
1) Type
2) Size
3) Horsepower
4) Year built
The full list of vessel categories and subcategories is available for free at Size of Fleet Report Vessel Categories.

James Mann: Stag Energy Weighs in on Shale Gas Debate
2012-08-20
In 2012, economists and energy experts alike have responded with vigorous enthusiasm to America's ever-burgeoning supply of natural gas, taken mostly from the nation's ample shale gas reserves. For most industry insiders and energy experts, the shale gas and oil boom has proven to be a windfall for the nation's energy economy, and a cause for true optimism. A few minority voices offer a more measured assessment, however, including Bernstein Research analyst Bob Brackett. Brackett recently opined that the deterioration of certain shale oil and gas wells suggests that America's ...
