Following a plot that takes us from modern day New York City to pre-WWII rural Burma, the narrative is complex yet enthralling, and although your mind will be frantically trying to put all the pieces together to come up with the overall picture, it's really best to sit back and exercise some patience while the book does it for you, as the resulting image will be infinitely better.
It's hard to sum up the plot in a few lines. In modern-day New York, 30-something-year-old Julia is coming to terms with her father's disappearance two years ago. She decides to follow his path, and it leads her to Burma, where she discovers her father's story which is - ultimately - a beautifully heartbreaking love story.
The book is essentially a story about family; a reminder that we don't always know the people closest to us as well as we think we do. It's also a study in how much our upbringing shapes us, while also serving as a worthwhile reminder that those with disabilities are sometimes MORE able because of them, despite what society may assume. This book is both heart-wrenching and uplifting and is definitely worth a spot on your summer reading list; however,it is so artfully written that it does not deserve to be lumped in with what most of us refer to as 'beach reads'.
