Living The Legacy, LCC to Serve the Community in University Park Area of Akron

New Nonprofit Organization's First Program is to Serve as Akron Chapter of Warriors Journey Home

2012-08-29
AKRON, OH, August 29, 2012 (Press-News.org) A brand new charitable organization, Living the Legacy, LLC has been formed to provide programs and services to the University Park area of Akron.

Living the Legacy, LCC, an independent, non sectarian and self funded organization, will act as the community development arm of First Congregational Church of Akron. Born of the values of the church, the goal is to help individuals in the University Park area and beyond to develop self sufficiency by providing them with opportunities to make improvements in their life.

By actively engaging volunteers to help the organization hopes to create a shift in the mindset of charity by not providing hand-outs, but by cultivating a mindset of reciprocal behavior. For example, someone who receives food from the food pantry would also work inside the food pantry or those who receive vegetables from community gardens might be weeding and watering the garden. The group plans to organize the communities to bring programs in a demand-driven environment that will provide what the neighborhood needs.

WARRIORS JOURNEY HOMES COMES TO AKRON
The first program of the new organization will be to facilitate the process of bringing the Warriors Journey Home program to Akron. On August 29, 2012 Living The Legacy will host a community information session about the healing circles for Warriors Journey Home.

"Since the University of Akron has over 1300 veterans on their campus, we were approached to become the Akron Chapter of Warriors Journey Home," said Susan Wuscher, acting executive director Living The Legacy, LLC.

The kick-off event for Warriors Journey Home will be held on Wednesday, August 29, 2012 from noon to 1 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Akron, 292 East Market Street, Akron Ohio. For those who want to eat lunch during the session, RSVP by August 24 to ensure there is enough food by calling 330-253-5109. The RSVP is not required to attend the event.

Warriors Journey Home is a program started at the First Congregational Church of Tallmadge in an effort to provide the means of spiritual healing for veterans, their families and the community through education, support, forgiveness, healing, reconciliation, reunification, and initiation. The healing circles help veterans to tell their story, assimilate back into society and create the bridge to civilian life back into the community. To RSVP leave a message at the church by calling 330-253-5109.

ABOUT LIVING THE LEGACY

Duane Angel, the Pastoral Care minister at First Congregational Church of Akron with the support of Dr. Jay Groat, the Senior Pastor.
